Current matters include conducting crypto-related customer due diligence for AG Insurance, alongside advising Blox on an app allowing customers to buy or sell cryptocurrency. DLA Piper‘s private equity and venture capital practice, which is spread between the Brussels and Antwerp offices, provides an end-to-end user service to clients on all aspects of the fund formation and management lifecycle. Pierre Berger has acted on the creation of a number of innovative new funds in Belgium, including in the crypto/blockchain space. In addition, it demonstrates strong capabilities in buyout transactions and exits, as well as portfolio work and tax-related private equity mandates. The firm generates a strong flow of work from domestic and international private equity houses; clients include Torqx Capital Partners, Carlyle, Tioga and Salesforce Ventures. It also has a strong profile among tech companies, for whom it handles their private funding rounds and venture capital investments. One of the names to note in the team is Michaël Heene, who led the advice to The Pacific Media Group on the widely publicised acquisition and rescue of Belgian football club KV Oostende. Another key figure is Koen Selleslags, who was part of the group which acted for Highlander Partners and portfolio company Biamp on Biamp’s acquisition of Audioprof. Caroline Daout and Erwin Simons are also recommended.

Belgium > Insurance

DLA Piper‘s client base ranges from traditional insurers, reinsurance companies and intermediaries to global data giants and insurtech start-ups. Led by Pierre Berger, the practice is praised for its ‘extensive expertise in insurance products, with very good knowledge of case law‘, facilitated by a multi-disciplinary set-up which allows an easy crossover between corporate, data protection, tax and labour law expertise where necessary. The team also handles litigation before the civil, commercial and administrative courts, as well as various financial regulators, with Bob Martens a key name on compliance issues.

Belgium > Banking, finance and capital markets

At DLA Piper, recent instructions included Johan Mouraux and lead lawyer Sander Buysse acting for a consortium of sponsors on the financing, construction and maintenance of a circa €100m 20MW greenfield biomass power plant in the Port of Ghent, Belgium. Mouraux is also well known for his expertise in export finance matters. Financial regulatory work is another core strength for the team; Pierre Berger, who co-heads the practice with Mouraux, is a noted practitioner in the area. On the debt capital markets side, the practice acts as longstanding counsel to the Kingdom of Belgium on government and sovereign bond issues. Isabelle Van Biesen was promoted to senior lead lawyer.
