With ‘superb commercial litigators‘, DLA Piper‘s Manchester team excels in M&A disputes, private equity and corporate reorganisations and has a growing reputation for contentious data protection matters. Practice head Andrew Smith focuses on corporate disputes while, for data work, the group benefits from the addition of legal director David Cook from Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP. The team also attracts praise for its ‘extensive knowledge of the energy sector‘ and counts the technology, food and retail, engineering, transport and infrastructure industries among its other sector specialisms. Jonathan Eatough is known for his ‘calm, strategic approach‘ in a range of matters spanning technology, procurement and corporate and commercial disputes, while legal director Philip Williams and senior associate Leontia McArdle focus on corporate disputes and group litigation respectively. Senior associate Charlotte Leith‘s arrival from the firm’s Dubai office added international arbitration expertise to the Manchester team.
DLA Piper represents local and national clients in complex, high-value litigation relating to commercial contracts, financial disputes, and cross-border issues, with notable capabilities in international arbitration and litigation. Clients include major sports, aerospace, and education companies. The team is overseen by North West litigation head Andrew Smith and senior Liverpool team member Christina Sharma, a director with broad expertise across domestic and international proceedings relating to shareholder and partnership disputes, contracts and procurement, and civil fraud. David Cook joined from Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP in early 2020, and specialises in data protection disputes arising from GDPR.
DLA Piper‘s ‘excellent‘ litigation and regulatory team ‘has built up a genuine specialism in regulated lending and financial services‘. Stewart Plant leads the team and, according to one client, ‘if you are a bank facing a high-value claim or class action this is the person to ring‘, particularly for retail banking and payment services disputes. Corporate crime and investigations expert John Gollaglee is the name to note for contentious regulatory issues, and legal director Philip Williams is popular among payment services and fintech clients, while legal director David Cook joined from Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP adding cyber and data security expertise. Among the senior associate ranks, Krystle Robinson and Benjamin Fellows have a breadth of financial services disputes experience and Leontia McArdle excels in retail banking issues and class actions.
DLA Piper is ‘exceptional in its ability to understand technically and operationally complex issues’. The practice acts for both private and public sector clients, including government departments and large international financial institutions, and handles a number of multi-jurisdictional data compliance programmes, cyber-attacks and litigation. Ross McKean co-heads the practice alongside Andrew Dyson; McKean is recommended for global data governance, information security and breach response issues, and Dyson handles advisory matters, engagements with regulators and cybersecurity mandates. David Cook, who joined as legal director from Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP in March 2020, brings with him regulatory, civil and criminal litigation experience.
The fintech team at DLA Piper handles a broad range of mandates for its clients, such as assistance with strategic projects, regulatory advice, financing and seed investments. Its cross-practice approach sees the firm act for banks and challenger banks, private equity and venture capital investors, asset managers, and trading platforms and exchanges. Martin Bartlam has expertise in technology solutions for new and traditional funding structures, while Anthony Day handles outsourcing and transformation projects. Bartlam and Day jointly lead the practice with Bryony Widdup, who is recommended for funding work. In 2020, Sophie Lessar joined from Simmons & Simmons, and in another key development, legal director David Cook was hired from Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP.
DLA Piper‘s team stands out for its position on the FCA Skilled Person panel, enabling it to advise the regulators, as well as representing financial institutions. In addition to more traditional financial regulatory disputes, the group also has an active practice involving fintech and regtech, leveraging the wider firm’s specialisms in cybersecurity and data protection cases. The team is jointly managed by Tony Katz, global co-chair of the financial services practice group and specialist in financial crime and enforcement matters; and Sam Millar, who has a particular focus on issues arising from financial products. Patrick Rappo is a key name for white-collar criminal investigations, representing corporates and financial institutions, as well as senior executives. Legal director David Cook joined from Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP in March 2020, bolstering the firm’s contentious cybersecurity and data protection offering.
DLA Piper LLP (US) is known for providing global tax planning and transactional advice, as well as tax controversy services. The ‘very knowledgable‘ team covers such areas as post-acquisition integration and global equity. Global tax practice chair Sang Kim is based in Silicon Valley and advises on global transfer pricing strategies, joint ventures, and M&A. In New York, Philip Rogers specializes in international tax planning and operational structuring, Kevin Glenn deals with international tax controversy, Frank Mugabi focuses on public cross-border M&A, and Maruti Narayan is an expert in international tax structuring and planning.
