José Miguel has 15 years of experience in corporate law and dispute resolution. He guides shareholders, directors and officers through the intricacies of corporate practice, with a focus on crisis management.
As chief judge for Colombia’s specialized business court, he presided over hundreds of cases concerning complex corporate litigation. Later, as head of the Colombian public utilities supervisor, he successfully led the efforts to prevent an energy crisis in the country.
He has been involved in Colombia’s main corporate legal reforms over the past decade, including Law 1258/08 on simplified companies and PL 70/15 on the liability of directors and officers and represented Colombia before Working Group 1 (business law) of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law.
His research on corporate and financial matters has been published by Oxford University Press, Wolters Kluwers, North Carolina Academic Press, Fordham University and the Oxford Centre for Corporate Reputation.

Held up for its ‘excellence‘ in civil and contractual liability, DLA Piper Martinez Beltrán‘s comprehensive practice encompasses the full spectrum of contentious matters, with class actions -particularly in the financial and insurance areas- standing out as a sweet spot. In a recent case in point, department co-head and managing partner Camilo Martínez successfully represented the Colombian Sugarcane Growers Association (Asocaña) in a constitutional group action. Fellow co-head José Miguel Mendoza, whose former posts include chief judge of business courts and head of the public utilities’ supervisor, specialises in corporate litigation. The 10-strong group also includes associate litigation directors, seniors Julian Solorza, who advises on class actions and punitive administrative processes, and Sergio Rojas leading the liability and damages practice. DLA Piper Martinez Beltrán continues to expand its activity in the market with its 18-strong lawyer group headed by three partners. Covering the whole scope of corporate and M&A related activity, the practice advises start-ups, venture capital funds, search funds and technology companies, while continues to work more traditional players. Practice heads Felipe Quintero and Juan Manuel de la Rosa, experienced in advising private equity funds and strategic blue-chip investors, are particularly praised when working in tandem. Managing partner and co-head Camilo Martínez served as lead counsel to Grupo Éxito in the high-profile share purchase agreement of Almacenes Éxito.
