Held up for its ‘excellence‘ in civil and contractual liability, DLA Piper Martinez Beltrán‘s comprehensive practice encompasses the full spectrum of contentious matters, with class actions -particularly in the financial and insurance areas- standing out as a sweet spot. In a recent case in point, department co-head and managing partner Camilo Martínez successfully represented the Colombian Sugarcane Growers Association (Asocaña) in a constitutional group action. Fellow co-head José Miguel Mendoza, whose former posts include chief judge of business courts and head of the public utilities’ supervisor, specialises in corporate litigation. The 10-strong group also includes associate litigation directors, seniors Julian Solorza, who advises on class actions and punitive administrative processes, and Sergio Rojas leading the liability and damages practice. Competition co-head María Claudia Martínez also participates in the area.

Colombia > Competition and antitrust

DLA Piper Martinez Beltrán multidisciplinary practice has developed expertise in merger reviews and investigations, including bid rigging and complex competition litigation (including class actions). María Claudia Martínez, who is also an economist, is the key name in the seven-strong practice; practice director since 2016, she was raised to the partnership in August 2019 and is now also responsible for data and consumer protection matters. A recent mandate saw the team act in a cartel competition class action case derived from an SIC investigation which in 2014 imposed fines on various sugar mills. Fellow co-head and managing partner Camilo Martínez is a reputed litigator, who also handles arbitration. Senior associate Julian Solorza directs the litigation practice; and associate Daniela Huertas provides additional support. The practice was further strengthened with the July-2020 hire of Natalia Fernández from Posse Herrera Ruiz.

Colombia > Dispute resolution > Arbitration

DLA Piper Martinez Beltrán handles domestic and international arbitration in commercial disputes, with a knack for using remedial advice for resolving contractual disputes through negotiation. In a case in point, ‘experienced, calm and honest’ managing partner Camilo Martínez led the representation of the shareholders of an automotiver importer in negotiations during the establishment of an international arbitration tribunal, allowed the issue’s resolution prior to the arbitrations initiation. The group is also acting in two different ICSID arbitration pre-trial stages, representing the interests of companies pursuing legal actions against sovereign governments. Senior associate Julian Solorza, who focuses on domestic arbitration, is also a key member of the team. In a notable move since publication, the firm has hired Ricardo Alarcón -formerly an associate at Shearman & Sterling LLP‘s Paris office- as international arbitration practice director (effective as of February 2021).
