John Murphy focuses on international project development and financings, capital markets transactions, M&A and general corporate matters, with an emphasis on power and infrastructure. He has over 21 years’ experience representing investors, project sponsors, developers, private sector banks and multilateral and bilateral public sector development financial institutions in the development and financing of power and other infrastructure projects (including Public-Private Partnerships (P3)) in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean.
In addition to his transactional practice, John has worked on cross-border and multijurisdictional workouts and restructurings in over 10 countries, spanning the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean, which has provided him with a keen awareness of critical issues in structuring and documenting transactions.
Having studied abroad in Spain and lived, worked and traveled extensively in Latin America and the Caribbean, John has familiarity with local customs and culture, market practices and civil law and common law concepts, all of which guide him in his business-oriented approach to advising clients and helping them solve complex challenges that arise in international engagements.

DLA Piper LLP (US) has a unique Latin America platform, having achieved significant regional geographic expansion in recent years, including an office in Puerto Rico that is home to a number of senior New York licensed lawyers. Along with offices in Washington DC, New York and Miami, the firm is able to target an array of international and regional lenders and borrowers, and do so at competitive rates, depending on the location of the advisory teams. Washington DC of counsel Amala Nath has also impressed in energy and infrastructure financings provided by MLAs and DFIs. Miami’s John Murphy is an experienced Latin America finance specialist who has an excellent record in energy and infrastructure finance, structured and trade finance, and syndicated lending. New York’s William Candelaria is another recognised Latin America finance specialist, including in acquisition and project finance. DLA Piper LLP (US)‘s Miami office is playing an anchor role in the firm’s recently developed and geographically expansive Latin America practice. The Miami team has experienced a significant uptick in engagements from Chinese and European multinationals, multilatinas and other Latin American entities, including family offices, and has developed an especially strong record in financial services and insurance, energy, natural resources, agribusiness, and hospitality and hotels. Much of the practice centres on M&A and project development. The firm’s growing credentials in private equity have led to growth in financial sponsor investment engagments in Latin America; global co-chair of the corporate and private equity practice Joseph Alexander splits his time between the Dallas, Miami and New York offices. The Miami team has worked alongside colleagues in other offices to support clients on Argentine and Peru PPP projects, and has developed a healthy market share of Colombian 4G toll road project mandates. A team led by Miami partner Francisco Cerezo, the US head of Latin America corporate, advised QBE Insurance Group on the sale of its Latin America business to Zurich, making Zurich the leading insurer in Argentina and a top three player in Ecuador. He also advised Costa Rican cable operator, Cabletica, on its $250m sale of a controlling interest to Liberty Latin America; Televisora de Costa Rica has retained a 20% share in the cable operator. John Murphy is another pivotal member of the Latin America team and has a fine record in project development, project finance and M&A in the region. Of counsel Diego Figueroa-Rodriguez is noted for tax-driven financing structures, including capital markets offerings and project finance engagements. DLA Piper LLP (US) targets Latin America from multiple locations in the region as well as from the US. It continues to make an impression in both power, including renewables, and in infrastructure. Its client base ranges from a multitude of project sponsors to lenders and equity investors; these include Stoneway Capital, Murphy Oil, Acciona Energia, Grupo Biofields, OPIC, Abengoa, Banco Santander, Société de Promotion et de Participation pour la Coopération (PROPARCO) and Banco BTG. The practice advised IDB on a $55m senior loan to Vale do Parana for the expansion and renewal of sugarcane plantations, the installation of a sugar factory and adjustments to integrate the mill with a 48MW electric power co-generation plant to be developed in a joint venture with Albioma. It also advised IDB and PROPARCO on the financing of construction and the operation of three photovoltaic solar power plants with a total capacity of some 24.5MW in Chile. New York-based global co-chair of the energy practice Robert Gruendel is noted for project development in the oil-and-gas sector. Miami’s John Murphy has a healthy record in project and infrastructure finance, while Washington DC partner Gregory Smith is helping to grow the firm’s market share in Latin America project financings driven by agency lenders.
