Career
Rodrigo Álvarez is a founding partner of DLA Piper Chile and co-heads the Tax practice. He has more than 20 years of experience, advising Chilean and foreign clients on a wide range of tax matters, both inbound and outbound, having participated in the structuring of businesses and companies in Chile, as well as in tax compliance issues and conflicts with the tax authority.
Rodrigo also has extensive experience in real estate and construction matters. He has advised more than 100 commercial, housing, and industrial projects developed in Chile.
His experience covers all stages of development of real estate and infrastructure projects as well as natural resources projects including title studies and regularization of titles, structuring, permits and compliance with urban planning regulations, bidding, financing and negotiation with financial institutions, land purchase, urban planning, long term leases, leasing contracts, negotiation of construction contracts (EPC and BOT) and commercialization of the projects, among others. In this context, Alvarez has advised and advises several of Chile’s leading real estate and construction companies.
In addition, Rodrigo has extensive experience in corporate matters, which includes advising on due diligence, mergers and acquisitions, creation of consortiums as well as on necessary matters for the development of the clients’ day-to-day business.
His broad experience includes advising on various industries and sectors such as real estate, financial services, technology, mining, family offices and production companies, among others.

’s ‘very powerful team’ is particularly noted for growth areas such as e-commerce and fintech, as well as its advice to digital and technological companies. The six-member practice additionally assists with the tax and restructuring aspects arising from the expansion of start-ups. The broad practice also covers the tax structuring of M&A, venture capital and private equity transactions, as well as tax compliance, and administrative and judicial tax proceedings. The group is co-led by Rodrigo Álvarez, who maintains a broad tax practice; and Amory Heine, who is ‘creative and assertive in her advice’. Senior associate Francisco Argüello advises both national and foreign clients on their domestic and cross-border tax matters.
Chile > Projects and infrastructure
The 10-strong projects practice at DLA Piper Chile advises both domestic and multinational companies on the development, acquisition, sale and financing of substantial energy and infrastructure projects (particularly wind and solar). The team is also able to leverage the expertise of the firm’s colleagues in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Peru for regional projects. The core group of principal advisers consists of Felipe Bahamondez, an expert in energy, natural gas and LNG projects; Rodrigo Álvarez, whose track record includes over 100 commercial, housing and industrial project developments in Chile; and recently-elevated partner and energy and infrastructure specialist, Diego Peña. Former counsel Paulina Farias left the firm in August 2023.
