DLA Piper ABBC is noted for its assistance with aviation matters because ‘little or no explanation is needed’. Air France-KLM, Lufthansa and EasyJet all count among the team's clients. It represented United Airlines in an infringement case launched by the Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC). The highly regarded António Moura Portugal heads the team, with support from senior associate Inês Teixeira.

Commercial, corporate and M&A Tier 2

DLA Piper ABBC has built a strong practice in financial-sector M&A, with a particular focus on assisting clients with private equity and venture capital investments. Other highlights included advising EDP Renováveis on the takeover bid for the client as well as for EDP by China Three Gorges. Nuno Azevedo Neves and João Costa Quinta head the team.

Dispute resolution Tier 3

The ‘well-rounded’ and ‘well-prepared’ team at DLA Piper ABBC covers a broad range of sectors, with longstanding expertise in employment disputes. João Nuno Azevedo Neves handles both litigation and arbitration, João Guedes covers employment and civil law disputes, and newly appointed partner Vanessa Antunes focuses on commercial, corporate and civil disputes.

Energy and natural resources Tier 3

DLA Piper ABBC has seen the departure of Bruno Azevedo Rodrigues to Telles de Abreu | Advogados in October 2017, but it maintains a very respectable list of clients that includes Enel and EDP Renováveis, which it advises on transactional, corporate, regulatory and tax matters. The latter receives advice on the public tender offer by China Three Gorges. Nuno Azevedo Neves heads the practice. Senior associate Gonçalo Castro Ribeiro joined from Garrigues Portugal in November 2017.

EU and competition Tier 3

DLA Piper ABBC was mostly active in merger control but also handled antitrust and regulatory matters. Clients include Lufthansa, EasyJet, IATA and Fosun Group. Of counsel and practice head Margarida Rosado da Fonseca ‘has an excellent knowledge of the competition legal framework’ and ‘anticipates legal issues concerning competition law’.

Intellectual property Tier 3

DLA Piper ABBC's team demonstrates ‘technical knowledge’ and ‘solicitude’. It assisted clients such as Grupo Multipessoal, AC Nielsen, Dyrup and Indesit with a range of IP matters, including GDPR. Senior associate Carmina Cardoso achieves ‘outstanding results in everything she does. She is results-oriented and overcomes difficulties and obstacles’. João Costa Quinta heads the practice.

Projects and project finance Tier 3

Combining its public law, corporate and finance knowledge, DLA Piper ABBC is active in energy, real estate, and highway projects, also handling related disputes and environmental issues. It advised the European Energy Efficiency Fund on a pipeline of deals for energy efficiency projects in Portugal, and EDP Produção on procurement and environmental issues pertaining to a hydroelectric dam. Nuno Azevedo Neves heads the practice. Bruno Azevedo Rodrigues left to join Telles de Abreu | Advogados in October 2017. Mafalda Ferreira was a new arrival from Uría Menéndez – Proença Carvalho in 2019.

Real estate and construction Tier 3

DLA Piper ABBC assists clients with lease and refurbishment agreements, as well as day-to-day matters. Clients include EDP and Volkswagen Autoeuropa. Luis Filipe Carvalho heads the team.

Tax Tier 3

DLA Piper ABBC possesses ‘exceptional legal knowledge that helps clients perform better’. It focuses on tax litigation, with niche expertise in the online gambling, tobacco, transport and energy sectors. Clients include JTI – Japan Tobacco International, EasyJet, Finerge and Trustwind. Practice head and tax and regulatory specialist António Moura Portugal is ‘an excellent communicator and leader’.

TMT Tier 3

Alongside its established focus on data protection, DLA Piper ABBC advised Fujifilm on IT and e-commerce, another area of expertise for the team, Whirlpool on marketing and advertising, and Tesla on direct and online sales, software and technology. João Costa Quinta heads the practice.

Banking and finance Tier 4

DLA Piper ABBC handled a number of complex transactions for an impressive client roster, which includes Banco Santander, EDP Renováveis, Caixa Bank and Banco do Brasil. Nuno Azevedo Neves, who has expertise in financial-sector M&A, heads the team.

Public law Tier 4

With DLA Piper ABBC, ‘there is no bluster, no delays or confusing legalese’; clients have ‘confidence in the decisions taken’. Advice includes all matters associated with EU legislation, competition law and market regulation. It includes merger filings, competition law infringements, antitrust litigation, abuse of dominant position and issues pertaining to free movement of persons and goods and services.

Finance and Projects: The firm combines wide-ranging experience and multi-disciplinary skills and is regularly involved in highly complex projects, assisting clients in all matters concerning corporate finance, private equity, financial instruments, capital markets and project finance.
