Joseph A. Riley practices in the area of tax law, with particular emphasis on the taxation of U.S. and international investment funds, including mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), closed-end funds, business development companies (BDCs), hedge funds, commodity pools and offshore funds.

Mr. Riley advises investors and investment managers on the taxation of securities and derivatives, tax reporting to investors, U.S. and foreign withholding taxes, IRS matters, the U.S. Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and other general tax issues.

Dechert LLP‘s international tax practice handles matters for a range of financial services firms, asset managers and investment funds, and represents some of the largest funds as well as small and mid-size funds. Joshua Milgrim leads the ‘seamless‘ team out of New York and led advice to GIC in connection with the strategic partnership between a Blackstone-led consortium (including Blackstone, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and GIC) and Thomson Reuters for Thomson Reuters’ Financial & Risk business, valued at $20bn; Daniel Dunn also worked on this matter. Steven Clemens is representing FS/KKR Advisor (as investment adviser) as well as FS Investment Corporation (FSIC) and Corporate Capital Trust (CCT) in connection with the merger of FSIC and CCT, a deal valued at $10.8bn. Alongside Clemens, Adrienne Baker in Boston is representing Barings in connection with the externalization of investment management of Triangle Capital Corporation, a business development company, through which Barings will become the investment adviser to Triangle. New additions to the team include William Cejudo, who joined in Washington DC in May 2018 from Clifford ChanceJoseph Riley joined in New York in October 2017 from Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP.
