Position

A trial and appellate lawyer with extensive experience before state and federal courts, arbitration tribunals and administrative agencies throughout the US. He concentrates on complex commercial cases, with a particular emphasis on financial disputes, class actions and multijurisdictional proceedings.

Career

Alan joined the bar in 1975. From 1975 to 1977 he served as law clerk to the Hon. William J. Bauer, US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Alan then spent four years representing the poor in individual and class actions with the Legal Assistance Foundation of Chicago. He joined Dentons predecessor firm Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal in 1981 and became a partner in 1983. Alan has served for several years as Legal Counsel and ex officio director of Planned Parenthood of Illinois. He also served in the past as a faculty member of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy.

Dentons’ Alan Gilbert in Chicago is currently representing Hanover Insurance Group in a nationwide class action in which the plaintiffs are seeking the recovery of allegedly underpaid lump sum distributions from its cash balance pension plan. In New York, practice head Brian Cousin and Richard Scharlat are defending Chimes District of Columbia and its self-funded health and welfare plan in an excessive fee suit brought by the Secretary of Labor. Other names to note include Douglas Scullion in San Francisco and Jason Scheiderer in Kansas City.
