Position

Bruce Baty is co-head of Dentons' Insurance Regulatory practice and a member of the firm's Insurance sector. With more than 30 years of experience, Bruce's practice focuses exclusively on representing property & casualty, life, accident and health insurance and reinsurance companies in regulatory, transactional and litigation matters.

Career

Bruce joined Dentons (then Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal) as partner in 2008. Prior to joining Dentons, Bruce was a partner at Stinson Morrison Hecker. Also, he currently is the Special Deputy Liquidator of National States Insurance Company, a Missouri-domiciled life and health insurance company.

Dentons’ department covers the full gamut of work for health insurers including transactions, regulatory mandates and insurance litigation. In a recent highlight, practice co-chair Bruce Baty and Jodi Adolf in Kansas City advised the Medical Protective Company on the design and implementation of reinsurance programs for healthcare facilities; the pair also acted for Luxottica and EyeMed Vision Care on its vision plans and various compliance issues. Other key names include San Francisco-based Michael Barnes and Bruce Merlin Fried in Washington DC. In March 2019, former practice co-head Kara Baysinger in San Francisco and New York-based Matthew Gaul moved to Mayer Brown.

Dentons is a ‘fantastic choice for regulatory matters’ and houses a nationwide spread of expertise for insurance regulatory mandates. It advises Luxottica on its insurance operations, including advising its managed vision care company EyeMed Vision Care on a range of regulatory and compliance matters, and assists AXA Equitable’s public policy group with a variety of regulatory issues. The team also advises multiple insurers on market conduct examinations and investigations. Prudential, Swiss Re, Chubb and Cigna are also clients. Bruce Baty in Kansas City co-chairs the team. Recently promoted counsel Kate Morgan is also a key contact. Dan Brown joined Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP in 2017. In March 2019, New York-based Matthew Gaul and Los Angeles-based Stephanie Duchene moved to Mayer Brown.
