Alison is a partner in the IP and technology team which deal with non-contentious matters. She has a depth of experience in working in a number of sectors including software and ICT, branding, life sciences and academia. Alison advises clients such as The Edrington Group, Pringle of Scotland, Bacardi and GALVmed. She is an accredited IP specialist with the Law Society of Scotland.


Trained Bird Semple; qualified 1999; moved to MMS on qualification; partner 2008. Has written a number of thought pieces on the issue of Open Source Software, which have been featured in The Times, the Daily Telegraph and Computer Headline magazine.

Dentons' first-rate team includes Martin Fanning, who 'applies a commercial mindset to legal issues'. The group assists clients with the gamut of commercial contracts in areas such as retail, aviation, healthcare and energy, among others.  Scott Singer, and senior associates Tristan Jonckheer and Nicola Harding, who assisted John Lewis Partnership with negotiating a number of major commercial deals in 2017, such as its contractual joint venture with HSBC to provide John Lewis-branded personal loans to customers. On the IT front, Dan Burge and senior associate Henrietta Baker advised EDF Energy on its application maintenance and development arrangements with TCS. Andy Lucas has a strong track record in public sector outsourcing projects, and acts for a number of government departments, including the Home Office and Ministry of Defence. Babette Märzheuser-Wood and Tatiana Kruse are also recommended. The firm expanded its offering in the Scottish market in 2017 by merging with Scottish firm Maclay Murray & Spens; the team now includes Alison Bryce and Ross Nicol, both of whom are based in Glasgow.

Dentons is marked out by its contentious IT practice, which focuses on dispute resolution in technology-related matters. The non-contentious team has expertise in IT outsourcing, hosted and online services as well as system procurement and implementation. Team leader Alison Bryce advised Ecometrica on its proprietary Service as a Software (SaaS) agreement and on various data protection compliance issues. Ross Nicol advised The Restaurant Group on all of its IT requirements, including the negotiation of an agreement with Get Grab, which enables pre-ordering of food and drink at airports.

Dentons‚Äô full-service IP practice has particular strength in matters pertaining to the food and drink industry, life sciences and branding, for which it is able to ‚Äėquickly identify key issues in complex situations‚Äô. Practice head Alison Bryce¬†advises UK and international clients on all non-contentious IP matters, such as licensing deals, portfolio acquisitions, investments and joint ventures. She recently assisted Kings Landing with its acquisition of the IP portfolio of Jaeger and QUIZ on all IP and commercial contract aspects of its ¬£200m Alternative Investment Market (AIM) listing. The ‚Äėapproachable‚Äô Ross Nicol¬†advised Stagecoach Group on branding issues arising from its partnership with South Gloucestershire Bus and Coach Company. Alongside Corinne Ward¬†and the ‚Äėknowledgeable‚Äô Susan Snedden, he advised STV Productions on various matters, including content-related IP and data protection issues and matters concerning a proposed appointment of a new distributor.
