Dentons' Russian Banking & Finance Practice

Position

Tim is a partner in Dentons’ Moscow office and the Head of the Dentons Russian Banking & Finance Practice Group. Tim has worked on Russia- and CIS-related transactions for more than 26 years and has developed a reputation as a leading expert among his peers and clients. He specialises in cross-border transactions and financings of all types, including bilateral and syndicated lending, real estate finance and project finance. Tim has a thorough understanding of the peculiarities of working with Russian and international financial institutions. This includes his two years of experience working in the Office of General Counsel of EBRD in London, on a working sabbatical (2001-2002). In addition to his banking and finance capabilities, Tim has significant corporate experience, including M&A and joint ventures. He devotes particular attention to direct foreign investment projects including the structuring and implementation of greenfield projects, as well as debt restructurings and insolvencies.

Dentons’ banking practice has benefited from the recruitment of cross-border finance specialist Tamer Amara, who joined from Clifford Chance in July 2018. The team is led by the dual-qualified Timothy Stubbs, who counts European Investment Bank, VTB Capital and Rosgosstrakh as clients. Evgenia Laurson advises on project finance and pre-export facilities, while Andrej Strijak and counsel Dennis Montgomery are experienced in acquisition and export finance. Highlights included advising Eurochem on a $750m five-year unsecured club financing with a group of banks, including mandated lead arrangers BNP Paribas Bank and Citibank (London branch), and assisting Raven Russia with a $65m secured loan facility for the refinancing of a warehouse complex near Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg.

Dentons' ‘market-leading’ practice continues to be at the forefront of financing transactions across Russia and the CIS regions owing to its expertise in finance regulation, project financings and acquisition and export finance. Following the firm's merger with Chinese firm, Dacheng, the Moscow practice is also uniquely positioned to handle various cross-border Chinese-CIS deals. Notable highlights include acting for UniCredit Bank on the financing of Nordgold group under a $75m facility agreement. Regulatory expert Timothy Stubbs advised The Central Bank of Russia on the drafting and development of consumer rights protection standards concerning the self-regulatory organisations of microfinance institutions. Other key figures include Evgenia Laurson and Andrei Strijak.

Dentons' team acts for international lenders on restructuring secured cross-border commercial property loans and export trade debt, as well as handling Russian insolvency proceedings. Roman Zaitsev specialises in commercial disputes; he is currently representing Sita International as the service provider and grantor of a license relating to to the bankruptcy proceedings of Russian airline Transaero. He is also acting for Commerzbank Eurasia in recovering debt under a credit agreement. In other work, he and Timothy Stubbs are advising The Polish Export Credit Insurance Corporation on recourse claims against a Russian borrower. St Petersburg-based Mikhail Ivanov is also active in disputes in the space.
