With over 15 years’ experience of UK and international corporate and commercial work, he specialises in M&A, private equity and venture capital transactions. Derek is also a Regional Leader (UK) of the Global Venture Technology and Emerging Growth Companies Group.

The ‘very knowledgeable and cohesive’ retail and consumer group at Dentons fields experienced partners from a wide range of legal disciplines, with substantial track records in the sector. Derek McCombe, in Glasgow, heads the UK team, which is particularly active in complex corporate and real estate deals and leverages the firm’s online portal, Legal Front Door, to provide clients with a single point of access to the wider firm’s legal services and specialists. The department – which advises retailers, brands, restaurants, landlords and franchises – also handles restructurings, franchising, cybersecurity, dispute resolution and employment matters. The department is a trusted legal adviser to Sainsbury’s – including Argos – across its full legal portfolio, with  Scott Singer playing a key role for the sumermarket giant. Real estate litigator Bryan Johnston and Tristan Jonckheer, whose practice revolves around technology, outsourcing and commercial contract matters, are other names to note.

Dentons‘ Scotland corporate offering, which dates back to its 2017 takeover of Maclay Murray & Spens, handles high-value domestic and international deals for leading businesses, fund managers, investors and lenders. Key areas of focus for the firm include public and private M&A, private equity and venture capital, corporate restructurings and equity capital markets work. The team is headed by Brian Moore and Iain Sutherland, both of whom have considerable transactional experience. Derek McCombe handles corporate finance transactions, and equity and debt fundraisings. Senior associate Owen McLennan is recommended for work in the financial services industry. Former Maclays chairman Michael Livingston and fellow partner Gordon Hobkirk have both recently retired.
