Pemberton Greenish is a successful central London law firm specialising in real estate, private wealth and corporate.

The firm: Pemberton Greenish LLP offers clients ‘big firm’ expertise in its chosen areas of practice, but with an individual approach and personal service that only specialist firms can provide. The partner-led teams are experienced in their fields and committed to developing a close understanding of clients’ business and legal needs. This personal approach not only fosters familiarity, openness and short lines of communication, but also helps to drive efficiency in getting the work done. The firm’s clients include real estate businesses, domestic and international private individuals, entrepreneurial and family businesses, and charitable foundations and trusts.

It is particularly well known as a leader in leasehold reform work and prime central London property, with a high-quality UK and international private wealth practice. In particular, the firm has developed the largest client base of major London estates of any comparable specialist practice. These include the Cadogan Estate, the Portman Estate, the Crown Estate, the Eyre Estate, the John Lyon’s Charity Estate, the Ilchester Estate, the Sloane Stanley Estate and the Day Estate.

Pemberton Greenish’s heritage spans over two centuries. Founded in 1775, the business has operated in a continuing partnership ever since. The present firm was established in 2000, having demerged from Lee & Pembertons in 2000. The aim was to establish a specialist firm dedicated to advising on all aspects of estate property, with a focus on London’s largest landed estates, together with a private client practice. Since then, the firm has more than doubled in size, and added both a corporate practice and a sizeable team of commercial real estate and construction practitioners, now one of its largest areas of practice.

The firm continues to grow in size, though it will focus this growth on its three core practice areas of corporate, real estate and private wealth. It has recently hired partner, Christine Hereward, as head of planning, adding further strength to the real estate team. It has been noted in legal publications as being understated, but ‘punching above its weight’ (The Lex 100).

Types of work undertaken: Pemberton Greenish’s core business is providing legal services to real estate companies and individuals owning and dealing in UK property assets, with a focus on prime central London. Its 200 years’ experience in the property market is complemented by offering wealth planning services to private clients in areas of UK and international tax planning, trusts, wills and the operation of UK and offshore investment vehicles. The firm has a particular focus on providing services to foreign nationals seeking to relocate to the UK. Its third area of business is the provision of advice and support to owners of small and medium-sized enterprises, including family businesses, across a range of industry sectors such as real estate, media and technology, hotel and leisure, and retail.

Real estate: led by 13 partners, Pemberton Greenish has a sizeable team of 21 fee earners, specialising in both the commercial, residential and mixed-use real estate markets. It offers a comprehensive service with legal advice on areas such as acquisitions, asset management, development, investment, financing, dispute resolution and specialist landlord and tenant, including leasehold enfranchisement.

Private wealth: the firm advises on a broad range of issues, including domicile, tax residence (for individuals, trustees and companies), inheritance tax, capital gains tax and income tax, the tax treatment of resident but non-domiciled individuals, anti-avoidance, and on the formation, administration and governance of UK trusts and charities. It also provides wills and probate services.

Corporate: the firm advises on the formation and governance of companies, acquisitions and disposals, share issues and loan arrangements, shareholder and partnership agreements, and general commercial contracts, working closely with privately-owned companies and private equity firms, as well as charitable organisations, partnerships, sole traders and individuals.
