Position

Partner, Head of Commodity and Trade Finance Team

Robert focuses on commodity and trade finance law, structuring deals and complex cross-border financing arrangements for many of the world’s major banks, traders, exporters and other participants in the global trade market. He is frequently called upon to advise in the default and restructuring of complex, cross-border trade financings and payment instruments, and has been called upon to advise in relation to complex credit issues in some of the landmark letter-of-credit cases in the English courts over the past decade.

Career

With over 25 years' experience Robert has an unrivalled knowledge of trade and commodities and the financial structures which support the industry. Robert joined from Reed Smith where he was a Partner in the Energy & Natural Resources Group for eight years. Prior to joining Reed Smith Robert spent six years at Clyde & Co.

Experience:

  • Advising a major U.S. party to a US$1 billion syndicated financing of crude oil supplies
  • Drafting and negotiating a facility for the pre-financing of West African crude oil
  • Advising on customer disclosure obligations in letter-of-credit-based structured emerging market transactions
  • Advising on the finance and risk participation of several South East Asian commodity supply contracts
  • Acting for a major U.S. bank in an automated supply chain and receivables financing scheme
  • Acting in relation to a multi-million dollar Asian biofuel financing facility
  • Representing a major Asian-based bank in a US$200 million facility for Chinese metals financing
  • Structuring and drafting documentation for a US$80 million Indonesian coal prepayment financing
  • Structuring and drafting an innovative US$800 million prepayment financing scheme for the supply of raw materials and production of biodiesel
  • Drafting and negotiating a multi-million dollar prepayment agreement for Indian oil products and refinancing arrangement
