Position

Ben is the Co-Chair of the Global Arbitration Group and Chair of the Dispute Resolution Practice Group, he focuses on International Arbitration primarily in the Upstream Oil & Gas and Trade & Commodities sectors and acts for a range of international clients.

In 2013, Ben was recognised as a Reuters Super Lawyer, demonstrating excellence in the practice of law.

Ben has substantial dispute resolution experience, specialising in international arbitration including at the ICC, ICSID, LCIA, LME and LMAA. One of Ben's recent Claimant cases was recognised by the American Lawyer arbitration scorecard as one of the top 10 Awards by quantum.

Ben led our substantial legal team on the high profile USD multi-billion arbitration between the Government of Yemen and various US oil interests. That case which resulted in a win for Yemen in 2008 is recognised as one of the major arbitration successes of its kind. Since then, Ben has continued to have a number of major successes for Yemen.

The Legal 500 has described Ben as "excellent" and "extremely efficient and hardworking," Ben Knowles "takes a great deal of trouble to gain the confidence of the clients."

Career

Qualified in College of law in 1993; joining Clyde & Co in 1993 as a Partner, Ben became Co-Chair of the Global Arbitration Group in January 2014 and Chair of the Dispute Resolution Practice Group in 2017. He was also a member of the Global Management Board from 2009 to 2017.

Clyde & Co LLP advises on both the contentious and non-contentious facets of public international law ranging from investor-state arbitrations and territorial boundary disputes to economic sanctions and diplomatic immunity. It also has extensive experience dealing with highly sensitive cross-border disputes for claimants and respondents within emerging markets. John Whittaker leads on investment disputes, sovereign immunity and sanction matters, particularly in cases involving sanctions in Iran and Syria.
