Clyde & Co LLP

Andrew is head of Clyde & Co's global specialty insurance practice and also leads the political risk/trade credit, specie and bloodstock teams. Andrew has worked for these markets for his entire career. He is well recognised by the legal directories including Chambers UK 2015 that notes he is considered a “specialist in political risk insurance.”

Within specialty, Andrew focuses on the areas of political risk and trade credit, political violence and terrorism, specie, fine art and cargo, and bloodstock. He is best known for his work in political and trade credit risks, including advising on product development, claims and recoveries in regions across the world. He has also been involved with many cases involving fraud in all its guises, including trade finance and commodity frauds.

Recent experience includes trade credit claims arising from the collapse in the oil and commodities prices, political violence claims arising from the Ukraine crisis, and the Arab Spring claims stemming from the global financial crisis, cases in Thailand arising from the May 2010 disturbances, and political violence and expropriations in South America.

Andrew is experienced in the preferred forums for dispute resolution in this class—particularly the London Court of International Arbitration and the Commercial Court in London—and in arbitrations under the rules of the ICC and UNCITRAL.

Andrew is also the legal representative to the Joint Specie Committee at Lloyd's. He has acted on many of the high-profile specie cases in recent years, such as High Court litigation relating to Angolan rough diamonds.

Andrew is well-known throughout the market as a reliable advisor on political risk and trade credit issues, and has been quoted in the Financial Times and industry press such as Insurance Day, providing commentary on current events affecting the market.

Insurance and reinsurance litigation

Within: Insurance and reinsurance litigation

With almost 200 partners across the UK involved in insurance work, a team that continues to recruit, and a client list that includes almost every leading (re)insurer globally - the likes of AIG, Allianz, Aviva, Swiss Re and Zurich - Clyde & Co LLP has earned its reputation as ‘a juggernaut for insurance matters’. The firm specialises in all types of insurance matters, spanning a variety of sectors and classes of insurance business, meaning it has the ‘ability to offer insurance companies the broadest coverage of business lines, at the highest quality and on a global scale’. This strength in depth is utilised in teams dedicated to specific sectors, such as aviation and space, directors' and officers' (D&O), marine, product liability/recall and cyber insurance. With regard to the latter, in September 2017 the firm launched Clyde Code, a consultancy service advising clients on all aspects of the burgeoning new area of smart contracts, blockchain and distributed ledger technology. Nigel Brook leads the global reinsurance team and James Cooper heads up the firm’s Lloyd's and London market practice. Another notable asset is the ‘very knowledgeable’ Neil Beresford, who provides ‘excellent service’, particularly for insurers and reinsurers, evidenced by instructions on some of the largest claims in the market with values in excess of $1bn. Jane Andrewartha and Andrew Grant, both well regarded for their ‘significant market acumen and specialist knowledge’, are also key members of the prolific team that also includes marine and energy insurance specialist Simon Jackson. David Abbott joined DWF in 2018.
