Particular strength in life-sciences, where there is deep industry knowledge and capability.

Ralph Cox is a highly impressive patent lawyer- I would rate him as exceptional, and one of the very best I have worked with. His knowledge of the industry and the law is exceptional, and he is equally at home dealing with contentious and non-contentious work. Ralph manages somehow to be able to absorb and process all of the detail while also maintaining a high-level view of the case, transaction or advice at hand, which means he is able to provide user-friendly commercial advice to clients.

Ralph Cox is the standout partner I have worked with. Ralph is technically a brilliant lawyer so, while his main focus is patents, he is also a very safe pair of hands when it comes to trade mark and copyright advice advice and disputes, and indeed related contractual, licensing and confidential information disputes. Testimonials

Clyde & Co have consistently met and exceeded our expectations as pension scheme lawyers. Their advice is grounded not only in a deep understanding of the law, but also by reference to how that law should be applied to our specific circumstances and trust obligations. This approach enables clear decisions to be made by the Trustee Board, having regard to all relevant factors, and, equally importantly, disregarding factors that are not relevant to the decision‘.

The members of the team are very knowledgeable in the specialist areas of pensions and employee benefits such as group life assurance arrangements. As an in-house legal team these are not areas where we had the necessary experience and expertise to advise the business and really appreciated their advice and guidance‘.

Very knowledgeable on all pension matters and quick to respond‘.

Terry Saeedi and Matthew Ambler have consistently provided exceptional service. They are always responsive, thoughtful and analytical in the advice provided, and understand that the Trustee Board needs a clear position to be articulated in order for decision to be made. What has made both Terry and Matthew stand out is the effort that they have made to fully understand our Trust Deed and rules, and to ensure that the advice given is aligned to all specific Trustee obligations across several scheme sections with different benefit promises‘.

The Lex 100 Verdict

Clyde & Co is a growing City firm with impressive international reach, boasting a 'Silver Circle-chasing' calibre of work and prowess in the insurance field, all of which make it a highly attractive place to train. Popular with prospective trainees looking for a 'global reach, insurance capabilities and early responsibility' within the training contract, the firm's sector focus, say respondents, make the firm's training better than others. Clyde & Co's 'specialised industry focus means that you can tailor your training contract to your specific interests, whether that is shipping, aviation, construction or something else'. The training programme also allows for 'high levels of exposure to litigation' and a host of international and client secondment opportunities, all highly praised. Trainees consider the hours to be broadly better than at other similar firms, one added that 'there are very few trainees I know of that have worked weekends or past midnight and compared to our equals in terms of size and revenue that is quite impressive'. However, remuneration was a consistent concern for respondents, who feel that the pay is 'just not on par with our equals', particularly at NQ level. While the work/life balance is applauded, there were grumbles over office technology and perceived differences between regional and London offices. However, trainees present an overall positive feeling about the firm, saying 'there's a culture to support and help each other thrive no matter what level you are' and they feel welcomed. As one respondent said, 'Clyde & Co felt like a family during the vacation scheme and it still does'.
