David TowersClifford Chance LLP

Clifford Chance LLP provides ‘very innovative and commercial’ advice, both in a restructuring and formal insolvency setting, to myriad stakeholders including debtors, insolvency practitioners, banks and funds. Led from London by Philip Hertz , the six-partner team has ‘a tremendous ability to reach across practices and geographies to provide comprehensive advice in complex restructurings involving multiple jurisdictions’. This was recently underscored by its advice to the Codere Group on its €1.2bn restructuring, which also utilised experts in Spain and Luxembourg. ‘Able to blend his outstanding technical skills with a commercial mindset’, Iain White led on this matter but is equally as adept at handling creditor-side mandates including his recent lead role for the ad hoc committee on MNC Health’s complex cross-border restructuring. Although he has a versatile practice, the ‘outstanding’ John MacLennan is particularly well-known on behalf of senior lenders as creditors on cross-border mandates. The ‘amazing’ David Towers is also a key practitioner for creditor/investor work, particularly in light of his alternative lender experience. Melissa Coakley displays a ‘high level of technical knowledge and strategic thinking’, and alongside Hertz, who ‘has a fantastic ability to simplify the most complex of legal issues’, recently played a key role on behalf of the Official Receiver and the Special Managers regarding the Baglan Bay Power station compulsory liquidation.
