Javier Tamayo JaramilloTamayo Jaramillo & Asociados

The insurance practice at Tamayo Jaramillo & Asociados has recently undergone significant changes to its team structure. The department took a hit when leading lawyer Laura Restrepo left to set up her own firm alongside partner Ana Isabel Villa in mid-2020. This followed the departure of Ana Catalina Restrepo earlier in the year to DAC Beachcroft Colombia. However the firm has been bolstered by the return of partners Daniel Ossa Gómez and Laura Castaño Echeverri from Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) and Ariza & Marin respectively. Led by former judiciary Javier Tamayo Jaramillo and risk analysis specialist Carlos Andres Gonzales Galvís, the 14-strong group has particular strength in advising on complex and high-value claims arising from accidents and environmental contamination to product liability and medical malpractice. Operating out of both Medellín and Bogotá, the firm represents insurance companies and claimants before civil, labour and administrative courts.

Colombia > Dispute resolution > Litigation

Insurance boutique Tamayo Jaramillo & Asociados is experienced in representing insurers and companies in product and construction liability matters, medical malpractice and class actions arising from environmental contamination, among other matters. Headquartered in in Medellín (but with additional offices in Bogotá), the 14-strong practice is led by founding partner Javier Tamayo Jaramillo, a former judge of the Supreme Court of Justice with an outstanding track record in insurance and an enviable standing in disputes matters. Following on from an earlier loss in February, the June-2020 departures of Laura Restrepo and Ana Isabel Villa to establish their own practice, has provoked a not inconsiderable reshuffle. By way of response, the firm has promoted associates Carlos Andrés González and Margarita Jaramillo Cossio (who both focus on insurance and civil responsibility), and litigator Luis Miguel Gómez to the partnership, and brought back Daniel Ossa Gómez -from Empresas Públicas de Medellin (EPM)- and Laura Castaño Echeverri -from Ariza & Marin – both of whom formerly worked at the firm. All five new partners were announced in October 2020, and Castaño -whose practice focuses on litigation and consulting in civil liability, insurance, and contract law- now co-heads the dispute resolution practice with Tamayo. Among the associate ranks, constitutional-actions specialist Daniel Jaramillo and insurance and procedural-law specialist Daniel Bedoya are also noted.

Colombia > City focus > Medellín

Medellín-based but with a Bogotá office and a national reputation, 14-strong insurance specialist firm Tamayo Jaramillo & Asociados has a 25-year trajectory handling the full range of insurance and underwriting matters, along with related disputes and contentious work. It also handles transport law. Particularly known for its litigation practice where it handles major claims, accidents, environmental pollution, product liability, medical malpractice, machinery failure and constructor liability, among other matters, the disputes team represents clients in the civil, labour and administrative courts and before state entities such as the SIC; it also handles class actions suits and arbitration. Firm founder, former Supreme Court judge and co-founder of IARCE (today the Instituto Colombiano de Responsibilidad Civil y del Estado), Javier Tamayo Jaramillo has over 40 years’ experience in insurance and is one of the foremost jurists in his field. Fluent in English and German as well as Spanish, insurance and risk analysis specialist Laura Restrepo Madrid has over 20 years at the firm (and its predecessor, Tamayo & Moreno). Beyond senior partner level, however, the firm has undergone a major restructuring. Following the February 2020 departure of Ana Catalina Restrepo (to DAC Beachcroft Colombia), and the subsequent June 2020 departures of Laura Restrepo and Ana Isabel Villa to establish their own firm, former senior associates Carlos Andres Gonzales Galvís (risk analysis, insurance, liability, litigation and  procedural law), Luis Miguel Gómez (litigation) and Margarita Rosa Jaramillo (liability and insurance law ) were all made partners after more than a decade as associates, as were Daniel Ossa Gómez, who returned to the firm after a year as head of legal processes and reclamations at EPM; and Laura Castaño Echeverri (litigation and consulting in civil liability, insurance, and contract law) who returned from Ariza & Marin. In the wake of the above, insurance specialist Juliana Gómez Londoño is the key associate.
