Work Department

Serious and general crime; business crime and regulation.

Paul Morris is a partner at BCL and head of the serious and general crime department. His practice encompasses a wide breadth of criminal defence work including serious and often complex prosecutions and he has established a first-class reputation for defending sexual (often historic) allegations. He is adept at crisis management, often arising from what are stressful, embarrassing and significantly damaging allegations – both financially and reputationally. He frequently succeeds in stopping a case before it reaches charge or trial, with recent highlights seeing him secure the discontinuance of the widely publicised police investigation of Sir Cliff Richard. Paul also represented three students from the Royal Agricultural University ('RAU'), charged with raping another RAU student, securing the cessation of the proceedings before trial. The Crown Prosecution Service offered no evidence and he secured one of the largest costs orders ever against them for their conduct in bringing the case. Paul also acts in a number of cases involving violence and public disorder, particularly where self-defence is raised, and provides specialist advice and representation at the police station and in property search and seizures. Paul advised Jeremy Clarkson in relation to the highly publicised assault against his producer and he recently acted for a Premiership rugby player in relation to allegations of violence. Paul advises on the merits of appeal against conviction and sentence, this year securing the release of a client serving eleven years in prison for multiple rape convictions, after the Court of Appeal found the convictions unsafe. He also advises surgeons, dentists and medical practitioners in criminal investigations and handles the parallel regulatory proceedings. He has developed a particularly successful team at BCL that routinely composes successful written submissions to investigating or prosecuting authorities to ensure prosecutions are not brought. The team also provides advice and assistance for clients who are witnesses for the prosecution or who have been summonsed or ordered to produce documentation. He is frequently asked to advise corporate entities and TV production companies on pre and post-broadcasting issues. He also specialises in acting for medical professionals facing investigation or prosecution in conjunction with associated regulatory / disciplinary proceedings.
