For two decades, Alejandro has advised and represented Fortune 500 companies and other wellknown companies around the world to establish, operate, monitor and grow their investments in Mexico and Latin America.

Alejandro specializes in assisting companies with their initial expansion into Mexico and Latin America, as well as helping established companies with all aspects of conducting international business.

Alejandro maintains a diverse practice representing companies in a broad range of industries, including energy, hospitality (developers, managers and financing), private equity, real estate and retail (including direct sales), and has represented clients in various transactional matters including mergers and acquisitions, corporate and tax structuring, project finance and project management. He also have experience in anti-corruption assessment, compliance, consumer law, due diligence assessments, expert witness, human resource and labor law, litigation assessments and privacy law. Drawing upon his over 20 years of experience, he consistently provides high-quality legal services to his clients.
He was partner at Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP, Dallas and Mexico City from 1996 to 2014.

He went to Columbia Law School 1996, LL.M. with a concentration in Corporate and Tax Structuring and attained his law degree at Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de Mexico (ITAM) – School of Law 1994, Juris Doctorate.

SMPS Legal considerably deepened its real estate capabilities in 2020 with the hire of virtually all of legacy firm Romo Paillés, S.C.‘s real estate practice. Former managing partner María Teresa Paillés, a leading player in the real estate sector with a strong focus on transactions in the hospitality industry, has joined the firm along with fellow partner María Esther Rey and two associates. They will reinforce the team co-led by Alejandro Ortiz, who operates from the firm’s Dallas office and is often sought-out by clients interested in tourist developments in Mexico; and Eduardo Pizarro, who has particular expertise in the financial and energy sectors. Recently appointed partner Andrés Pizarro, who is especially skilled at handling complex trusts, trust operations and FIBRAs, is another name to note. The practice, which is currently working on several projects related to shopping malls, regularly advises clients on all types of real estate and asset transactions, including sales and purchases, leasing, financing, development and construction, and liens on real estate assets, as well as handling audits, and regulatory, tax and environmental matters.
