Alexis Michel has focused his practice not only in the compliance of obligations in matters of customs and foreign trade, but in aiding, through the enforcement of administrative instruments that Mexican authorities have implemented, and identifying and developing areas with opportunities of expansion for his clients. Alexis is specialized in tariff classification, customs valuation, implementation of free trade agreements, origin verifications, criteria confirmation and certifications before different authorities, as well as development of foreign trade development programs as Maquila, Sector Promotion and Drawback.
Likewise, he has extensive experience in the performance of internal audits to verify compliance with the obligations arising from foreign trade transactions. He has represented clients before the different tax and customs authorities in audits, administrative proceedings and contesting of resolutions derived therefrom. Furthermore, he has developed a successful practice in matters of international commerce unfair trade practices such as antidumping and subventions.
Before joining SMPS, Alexis worked at Jauregui, Navarrete, Nader y Rojas, S.C., White & Case LLP, Trón y Natera, S.C. and Natera y Espinoza, S.C., accruing more than 19 years of experience.

Alexis is the former Head of the Foreign Trade Commission of the Mexican Bar Association (Barra Mexicana Colegio de Abogados, A.C.), is an active member of the American Chamber of Commerce, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the International Chamber of Commerce.
Alexis obtained his J.D. from the División de Estudios Superiores of Centro Universitario México, with honors, in 1998 and his degree in the Specialty in Tax Law from Universidad Panamericana with honors in 2006.

Partner Alexis Michel stands at the helm of the solid international trade and customs practice at SMPS Legal, which is praised for its advice on issues related with anti-dumping, and countervailing and safeguards investigations, while also skillfully handling mandates on matters including tax obligations, tariff classification, customs valuation, FTA matters, verification of origin procedures, criteria confirmation before tax and customs authorities; foreign trade programs (such as IMMEX), drawback and sector promotion programs; and internal audits and compliance.
