Randy J. Kaardal, QC, Counsel and Managing Partner

Counsel and Managing Partner Randy J. Kaardal, QC explains how the firm is adapting to clients’ changing needs

1) What do you see as the main points that differentiate Hunter Litigation Chambers from your competitors?

Our business is focused only on dispute resolution and as a result, we are able to dedicate 100% of our resources, including training, to develop and maintain the skills our clients require to successfully prosecute, defend or resolve disputes.  We are especially proud of the fact that our younger lawyers, through probono opportunities or other experience appropriate files, are gaining practical experience before the courts and other tribunals, thereby maintaining the skill sets needed at a litigation boutique.  As a result, we are able to staff files in a manner sensitive to the client’s concerns about cost without compromising the quality of our service.

2) Which practices do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?

The exciting thing at Hunter Litigation is that we have seen our practice grow every year.  Interestingly, real growth has been across most of our practice areas, including, corporate commercial disputes, natural resource development disputes, administrative law challenges, regulatory reviews and employment / harassment issues.

3) Is technology changing the way you interact with your clients, and the services you can provide them?

Our firm utilizes the leading programs and system for document management. As many of the cases we handle are document intensive, this lessens our reliance on our client for document review and allows us to be more efficient in the management of the file. As for direct interaction with clients, we continue to find value in meeting our clients face to face often at their places of business. This provides us with valuable insight into the client’s business operations that allows us to better represent them in hearings or find effective practical resolutions to their disputes.

4) Can you give us a practical example of how you have helped a client to add value to their business?

Since its founding in 2006, Hunter Litigation Chambers has provided practical and cost-effective advice to clients to resolve disputes through negotiation and mediation, as well as arbitration and litigation.  Our Senior Lawyers have found practical solutions through effective discovery and created the conditions for cost effective resolution either through mediation or consent dismissal.  Our clients find that effective counsel work limits their time spent defending doubtful claims, or can gain them strong positions to advance their business.

5) Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms - where do you see the firm in three years’ time?

Hunter Litigation Chambers continues to grow organically and we expect over the next three to five years that we will add more talented counsel and continue to provide excellent advice and counsel work to our clients.
