Career
Juan Carlos Esguerra is Founding Partner of Esguerra Asesores Jurídicos and leads the Arbitration, Public Law and Dispute Resolution practice areas.
He has more than 40 years of experience advising national and international companies in arbitration, administrative law, public law, constitutional law and civil and corporate law.
Apart from his professional experience, Juan Carlos Esguerra has occupied various public positions in Colombia such as: Secretary General and Vice-Minister of Communications, elected Delegate to the National Constitutional Assembly in 1991, Minister of National Defense, Ambassador of Colombia to the United States, and Minister of Justice.
He was Dean of Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Law School, and for more than thirty years he has been a professor of Administrative Law and Constitutional Law in the same University. He has also served as professor of Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, and Economic Law at the Externado University, Andes University, and Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario University. Additionally, he is a member of the Cornell Law School Advisory Council (U.S.A.).

Dr. Esguerra received his law degree from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, a specialist degree in socio-economic sciences at the same university, and a Masters in Law (LL.M) from Cornell University in the United States.

A new entry to the ranking, Esguerra Asesores Jurídicos’ TMT practice is led by Juan Carlos Esguerra and Alfonso Miranda. It is acting as legal counsel to BT Latam Colombia regarding its business development, especially for carrier, connectivity and datacentre services. The team is also responsible for coordinating Axesat’s interaction with governmental agencies.

Esguerra Asesores Jurídicos acts for clients in national and international arbitration tribunals in matters relating to concessions and other public contracts. Founding partner and former Secretary of Justice Juan Carlos Esguerra coordinated the government’s expert commission on domestic arbitration responsible for presenting the bill on arbitration passed by Congress. The ‘excellent’ and ‘very responsive’ team is defending the interests of Colombia Telecomunicaciones (Telefonica) in a high-profile $100m arbitral proceeding against the Ministry of Technologies to obtain the return of wireless communication service assets. The firm has also recently incorporated maritime specialist José Vicente Guzmán, formerly at his own firm, Guzmán Escobar & Asociados.

Clients, which include Telefónica, Agencia Nacional de Infraestructura, Seguros Bolívar and Coca Cola, highlight that Esguerra Asesores Jurídicos is a ‘mid-size firm but certainly, the team provides the same or better service’ than other more sizeable firms in the country. Headed by founding partner Juan Carlos Esguerra and Felipe Piquero, the 14-strong team is representing Coviandina against a lawsuit that seeks to obtain the annulment of an environmental license for the construction of the road expansion from Bogotá to Villavicencio.
