Career

Thomas is co-chair of the firm’s tax group. He has extensive experience advising clients on income tax matters, with particular emphasis on the tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganizations, structured financings, income trusts and cross-border transactions. Thomas also represents clients in disputes with the Canada Revenue Agency, both at the audit and appeals levels, and has appeared as counsel in numerous cases before the Tax Court of Canada and Federal Court. As reported in Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business, clients recognize Thomas for a “balanced and articulate approach to tax risks” and appreciate that “his litigation background is very helpful when developing tax plans”. Thomas is a frequent speaker on tax matters, and has written and presented papers at conferences and seminars across Canada. He is also a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation and the International Fiscal Association.
