Career

Co-leader of the firm’s national real estate practice and leader of the Toronto office practice, Jane Helmstadter acts for a broad range of private and institutional real estate developers, investors and owners in Canadian, cross-border and international commercial transactions. Jane advises clients on the acquisition, disposition and financing of all types of real property, including office buildings, retail property, industrial property, multi-family residential developments and seniors housing. She negotiates property and asset management contracts for owners of real estate and acts for both landlords and tenants in drafting and negotiating commercial leases and land leases. Jane represents clients in structuring and forming Canadian and cross-border partnerships and joint ventures. Jane also provides real estate and leasing advice to renewable energy developers, including wind and solar energy developers. Jane shares her real estate knowledge as a regular speaker at RealLeasing, a forum that discusses trends, strategies and key issues for Canadian real estate leasing. She has also spoken at Continuing Legal Education (CLE) sessions for the Law Society of Upper Canada, the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) law update and private CLE sessions. Jane served on the board of Toronto Commercial Real Estate Women (Toronto CREW), including as President in 2009. She is currently Chair of the Toronto CREW nominating committee and sits on the Toronto CREW Foundation Council. Toronto CREW, a professional association of commercial real estate professionals, is a chapter of CREW Network, a US-based real estate association with over 8,000 members.

In Toronto, Simon Crawford draws on extensive experience to advise on private equity matters, fund formation, joint ventures, income trusts and the purchase and sale of real estate assets and real estate companies; and John van Gent acts for both landlords and tenants on commercial leasing, sub-leasing and land leasing arrangements.
