Roberto A. Fortunati is partner of Beccar Varela and a member of its Executive Committee. His practice areas are banking and project finance with particular focus on mining and oil & gas. He has also been acting as consultant to The World Bank on insolvency matters.


He started practicing as in-house counsel of Amoco Argentina Oil Company. In 1986 he joined Beccar Varela, where he was a partner until 2001, when he joined Citigroup (Argentina) as General Counsel. In 2003 he founded the firm Fortunati & Asociados.

He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Torcuato Di Tella University Law School and Professor in postgraduate courses on Oil & Gas Project finance at the University of Buenos Aires Law School and on Corporate Law at the University of San Andrés .

In 2016, he was ranked in Chambers Latin America, and has been included in Who’sWhoLegal for project finance, M&A, energy, and mining.


He speaks Spanish, English, French, Portuguese and Italian.


He is a member of the Colegio Público de Abogados de la Capital Federal (Buenos Aires), the International Bar Association and the American Bar Association.  He is on the Board of Directors of several companies, and is a member of different professional associations, both local and foreign, including PDAC, AIPN and the Argentine Petroleum Institute (IAPG). He is on the list of arbitrators of the MAE (Open Electronic Market).


Roberto received his law degree the Universidad de Buenos Aires (1979) and represented the firm in its Brussels office (1993).

The increasingly prominent corporate practice garnered a significant share of headline transactions over the past year, with its advice to Minerva on its $300m acquisition of JBS in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay standing out as a highlight – the ‘very knowledgeableHoracio Beccar Varela paired up with ‘very professional’ junior partner Casiana Silveyra Perdriel to lead that work. The same team also acted for Black Bamboo Enterprises on its $69m acquisition of four slaughterhouses and refrigeration facilities from Marfrig Argentina and Estancias del Sur. In a notable piece of banking M&A, Javier Magnasco and Alejandro Poletto acted together to advise Deutsche Bank on the sale of its business in Argentina to Banco Comafi. The group also draws upon the senior experience of Ramón Moyano (‘extremely smart’) and María Shakespear (‘well-informed and great to deal with’), while impressive associates include María Eugenia Radaelli.

Recent work includes acting for Southern Copper on regulatory and community matters regarding its exploration projects in Argentina.
