Career

Abel Amaro is a regional Practice Group Leader for the Tax Practice, as well as, a member of the Firm’s Management Committee. Mr. Amaro focuses his practice on tax consulting, tax planning, tax litigation and customs, routinely providing counsel to major international and Brazilian corporations. He is fluent in all aspects of the complex tax laws of Brazil and brings extensive experience from both the in-house and advisory perspective to his clients, which includes five years as senior tax and customs manager with a global audit firm. In addition to acting as tax counsel, Mr. Amaro advises companies on strategies to efficiently reduce their tax liabilities through effective tax planning.

Mr. Amaro represents companies at various stages of tax controversies, including administrative appeals, judicial and appellate proceedings. He has significant experience and success in dealing with the Brazilian tax authority and has developed strong relationships with judges in the administrative and judicial divisions/sections. Clients value his ability to assemble talented teams of tax professionals to handle all aspects of the clients’ tax needs efficiently. He is also active in training and developing the skills and knowledge of the Firm’s young tax attorneys.

Mr. Amaro’s early career experience includes time in-house working for General Electric (G.E.) where he was responsible for tax issues related to Brazil. While at G.E., he also gained invaluable experience handling indirect taxation issues. Formerly a senior tax manager at a global audit firm, and since 1990 a partner with major law firms, Mr. Amaro is adept at handling tax issues for companies in a variety of industries including telecommunications, manufacturing, consumer products and hospitality.
