Position
Nigel Sanders is one of the leading commercial litigation and trust disputes lawyers in Jersey and has over 30 years’ experience as a contentious practitioner.
Nigel has been practising in Jersey since 2006, but has also worked in London, Abu Dhabi and the Cayman Islands. Besides commercial and trusts disputes his expertise encompasses contentious insolvency and corporate matters as well as contentious regulatory advisory work and competition law disputes.
He has been admitted in Jersey, England and Wales, BVI and Cayman and regularly advises on cross-border issues relating to trusts, probate, insolvency, fraud and asset tracing and corporate and commercial disputes
Nigel appears regularly before the Jersey Court and has represented professional and institutional clients as well as individuals in a wide range of important reported cases. He is recognised by Chambers & Partners and Legal 500.

Career
Nigel trained as a solicitor in London with Frere Cholmeley before joining Macfarlanes with whom he spent his first three years based in Abu Dhabi. After a further period in London with Macfarlanes, in 2003 Nigel joined Walkers in the Cayman Islands. Between 2006 and 2019 he worked for another leading firm in Jersey, where he headed the dispute resolution department for a number of years. Nigel rejoined Walkers as a partner in the firm’s Jersey office in January 2019.

Walkers is ‘practical in its approach’ to a variety of private client and trust issues, including the establishment of Jersey-based family offices, and the structuring of trusts. The group additionally handles litigation concerning assets held in trusts, and the restructuring of trust and other wealth-holding structures. Rajah Abusrewil is the key contact for non-contentious work, overseeing the lifecycle of trusts and family offices for HNW clients, while Nigel Sanders takes the lead on disputes. Further contentious expertise is provided by Richard Holden, whose practice includes restructuring disagreements and commercial disputes concerning companies held in trusts.

Walkers acts for banks and trust companies amongst a range of regulated financial services clients in relation to Jersey’s AML regime, and considerably strengthened its capacity with the recruitment of A&L Goodbody LLP‘s Sian Langley and Appleby‘s Gemma Palmer in July 2023 and January 2024 respectively. Jointly heading the team are Dilmun Leach, who advises on the island’s AIFMD regulations and the developing rules governing digital assets, and Nigel Sanders, whose practice focuses on contentious regulatory matters, including issues of competition law. Amman Bulchandani maintains a broad practice covering AML matters, consumer credit and prudential regulation. Tom Fothergill departed the firm in December 2023.
