Position

Nigel Sanders is one of the leading commercial litigation and trust disputes lawyers in Jersey and has over 30 years’ experience as a contentious practitioner.

Nigel has been practising in Jersey since 2006, but has also worked in London, Abu Dhabi and the Cayman Islands. Besides commercial and trusts disputes his expertise encompasses contentious insolvency and corporate matters as well as contentious regulatory advisory work and competition law disputes.

He has been admitted in Jersey, England and Wales, BVI and Cayman and regularly advises on cross-border issues relating to trusts, probate, insolvency, fraud and asset tracing and corporate and commercial disputes

Nigel appears regularly before the Jersey Court and has represented professional and institutional clients as well as individuals in a wide range of important reported cases. He is recognised by Chambers & Partners and Legal 500.

Career

Nigel trained as a solicitor in London with Frere Cholmeley before joining Macfarlanes with whom he spent his first three years based in Abu Dhabi. After a further period in London with Macfarlanes, in 2003 Nigel joined Walkers in the Cayman Islands.  Between 2006 and 2019 he worked for another leading firm in Jersey, where he headed the dispute resolution department for a number of years. Nigel rejoined Walkers as a partner in the firm’s Jersey office in January 2019.

Walkers specialises in assisting financial services clients with all manner of regulatory issues, advising on AML obligations, new products and services, as well as defending clients facing investigations and enforcement proceedings. Leading the team are Dilmun Leach, who handles advisory regulatory matters, including queries on AIFMD regulations and development of asset classes such as cryptocurrencies and NFTs, and Nigel Sanders, who handles competition proceedings and fraud matters. Walkers‘ insolvency and dispute resolution team specialises in handling complex, cross-border disputes; contentious trust matters, commercial and contractual disputes, and insolvency proceedings are all areas of strength. The ‘truly excellent’ Nigel Sanders leads the team, with a practice covering both large-scale trust disputes and insolvency issues. Fraser Hern represents clients in insolvency and restructuring matters. Marc Seddon and Richard Holden both handle company and trusts disputes. Senior counsel James Turnbull and Charlotte Yates, who was recently made up to senior associate, are also noted.

Walkers offers its HNW clients advice on matters across the UK’s offshore jurisdictions, including the structuring of trusts and charitable vehicles, wills and succession planning. Rajah Abusrewil leads the non-contentious aspect of the practice, assisting with the establishment, management and termination of trust structures, while Nigel Sanders leads on the firm’s contentious matters, representing clients in a range of trust-related disputes. Richard Holden joined the team from Carey Olsen in September 2022, focusing on commercial and trust disputes, including fraud matters. Former practice head Robert Dobbyn departed in September 2022 to join Carey Olsen.
