Career

Ian is based in Walkers’ Ireland office where he is a partner in the firm’s Finance & Capital Markets group. Ian’s principal practice areas are structured products, capital markets, fund financing, general finance and distressed investment.

Ian advises on Irish and EU legal and regulatory aspects of the establishment, financing, operation and management of Irish special purpose vehicles and other investment vehicles which acquire a broad range of asset classes (loans, mortgages, receivables, distressed assets, insurance products etc) around the world.

Ian also advises on a wide range of finance, direct lending and general corporate matters, distressed investment and other bespoke structured product transactions. Ian has acted for various US and Asian lenders on a number of complex and innovative fund financing solutions including equity bridge facilities, acquisition financings, capital call facilities, NAV based margin loans and fund linked derivative solutions.

Walkers has a highly rated practice in CMBS and CLOs, and is also at the forefront of insurance linked securities (ILS) and catastrophe bonds. The department is also highly regarded for handling securitisations and significant risk transfer (SRT) issues. Andrew Traynor brings over 20 years of experience in structured finance and securitisation work, notably in risk transfer transactions and bank capital management matters. Ian McNamee is another key figure in securitisation work, and Noeleen Ruddy and Paddy Rath are singled out for their expertise in CLOs.

The group has seen an increase in instructions from banks and funds operating in real estate finance, as well as advising on distressed transactions and loan portfolio deals. Co-head of the finance and capital markets group Andrew Traynor is hugely experienced in fund finance work, which is also a recognised area of expertise for Ian McNamee.
