Career

Jonathan is an expert on the regulatory aspects of, and transaction structuring in, the mining and oil & gas industries. He also advises resources clients on international investment protection in Africa and compliance with international codes of practice applicable to the resources industry.

Jonathan has presented to South Africa’s select committees on Mineral Resources, Trade and Industry and Safety & Security on legislation applicable to the natural resources and payments sectors. He has extensive experience in developing structures which afford international investors protection under bilateral investment treaties as well as other instruments under international investment law.

He has advised on black economic empowerment transactions as well as localisation/ indigenisation transactions throughout Africa. Jonathan has served as the lead external legal adviser in Africa for MasterCard International working closely with the New York, Singapore, Dubai and Johannesburg centres. He has also advised on the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative’s international best practice models and contributed to the International Bar Association’s Model Mine Development Agreement Project.
