Career

Philip Coulson heads Bowmans’ Corporate and Commercial Department in Nairobi.

He specialises in company and commercial law, capital markets, property development, finance, acquisitions, take-overs, joint ventures, investments, corporate re-organisations, commercial contracts, tax, employment and land law matters tourism and conservation.

Philip is a member of Law Society of Kenya, Law Society of England and Wales and the International Bar Association and Commonwealth Lawyers’ Association.

He has an LLB from the University of Essex, UK; a Current Solicitor’s Practising Certificate from the Law Society of England and Wales and is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

Bowmans is at the forefront of cross-border transactions, most notably in the East Africa region. It has also handled a series of significant private equity exits and a number of headline corporate restructurings, including advising Kenya Airways on its debt and equity restructuring. The Nairobi office 'is doing very well from its South Africa connection', has 'fantastic people' and is 'rated highly'. Richard Harney 'works very hard to see the transaction through' and Paras Shah is 'very amiable, very client oriented and practical'. Joyce Karanja-Ng’ang’a is a leader in competition law and Philip Coulson has considerable experience in the space.

It is building its presence in new areas such as special economic zones and has leading expertise in construction, and community land and conservation issues. It advised Africa Pearl River on its 60% investment in Africa Economic Zones, which owns 600 acres of land which have special economic zone status. Philip Coulson and Alex Njage have outstanding reputations.
