Career

Jeremy Want is a Principal in Smart & Biggar’s Ottawa office. With over 20 years of experience in IP litigation, he has participated in many successful patent cases (including pharmaceuticals), trademarks and copyrights. Clients benefit from his involvement at all stages – investigating, preparing and protecting IP interests in order to effectively minimize their risk and successfully defend their interests. In his IP litigation practice, Jeremy regularly represents clients before the Federal Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and has also successfully argued cases before the Trademarks Opposition Board. He speaks regularly on issues relating to the Canadian patent system and patent litigation in Canada, including presentations for the Law Society of Ontario and Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC), and has authored and co-authored a number of papers and practice guides, including the “Canadian” chapters of Chambers Global Practice Guides and Practical Law. Recently Jeremy was named “Ottawa IP Lawyer of the Year” by Best Lawyers and has been recognized annually in numerous international and nation directories including MIP IP Stars, Benchmark Canada, WIPR Leaders, Lexpert, and Euromoney LMG Expert Guides. Fellow of IPIC, member of IPIC’s Litigation Committee. BSc Hons (Chemistry); LLB. Registered Trademark and Patent Agent. Called to the Ontario Bar in 2000 and the Alberta Bar in 2017.
