Career

Theodore Sum is a Principal in Smart & Biggar’s Vancouver office. His practice covers all aspects of intellectual property, with particular emphasis on licensing and commercialization, patent and trademark prosecution, due diligence, e-commerce and online issues and counseling Canadian, US and foreign clients on the strategic management and exploitation of their intellectual property assets. Ted works with clients across a wide range of sectors including high tech, software and IT, telecommunications, robotics, AI and machine learning, life science, energy, cleantech, chemicals, transportation, aerospace and defense, amongst others. He is frequently involved in public speaking engagements and has written several papers in the field. Ted is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of Victoria Law School and has served as an instructor at the University of British Columbia Law School for many years. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in Canada under IP law, IT law and technology law, as well as in IAM Patent 1000, Lexpert, The Legal 500 Canada, and World IP Review Leaders. Registered Patent and Trademark Agent. Called to the Bar in British Columbia and in Alberta.
