Career

Charles Collis is a Director in the Corporate department in the Bermuda office of Conyers Dill & Pearman and is Head of the Bermuda Insurance Practice. Charles joined Conyers in 1990 and became a partner in 1998. Charles has just completed his four year secondment as Head of the London Office and has returned to Bermuda to focus on his busy insurance practice.

Charles specialises in insurance and reinsurance, advising on corporate and regulatory matters. Charles has advised on the establishment of numerous captive insurance companies, as well as commercial reinsurance companies. The convergence of the insurance markets and capital markets has led Charles to specialise in insurance linked securities. He has conducted a significant number of insurance securitisations and transformation transactions using special purpose vehicles, traditional reinsurance companies and segregated account companies.

Conyers acts for a large number of Bermuda’s insurers and reinsurers, including class 4 and class E companies, as well as all other classes of insurers, including captive insurers and special purpose insurers; the practice routinely acts in anti-suit injunctions in relation to foreign proceedings, applications to the Supreme Court arising out of arbitrations, substantive arbitrations, and providing expert evidence on Bermuda law. Charles Collis heads the Bermuda insurance practice; Chris Garrod led advice to AXA on an agreement to acquire the Bermuda-based XL Group, a global property and casualty commercial lines insurer and reinsurer; and Michael Frith provided Bermuda legal and regulatory advice on the formation and group structure of the Langhorne Group, including Langhorne Holdings and Langhorne Reinsurance (Bermuda). Other key directors are David Doyle, Bermuda corporate head Graham Collis, Sophia Greaves and Chiara Nannini; the associates to note are Alexandra Macdonald and Jacqueline King. Former counsel Mary Ward joined Carey Olsen.
