Career

Michael’s practice involves all aspects of commercial real estate and finance transactions. He has represented institutional investors, pension funds, life insurance companies and developers in their real estate activities in Texas and throughout the United States. He has extensive experience representing various lenders and borrowers in real estate loans and workouts, including construction loans, acquisition loans, mortgage loans and mezzanine financings.

Michael’s development experience includes the acquisition and development of office, retail and industrial projects and various mixed-use developments. He has also represented a number of publicly traded companies in the acquisition and development of their corporate headquarters. His practice includes assisting clients in the structuring, negotiation and documentation of development partnerships, joint ventures, and other entities for real estate development, and the negotiation and preparation of financing documents for real estate development, including both construction and permanent financing. 

He has also represented both landlords and tenants on numerous large commercial leases in Class A buildings and projects. Michael has worked with various clients in connection with the negotiation and documentation of numerous structured finance transactions to facilitate real estate development activities, including both synthetic leases and sale/leaseback transactions.

In April 2018, Hunton & Williams and Andrews Kurth Kenyon merged to form Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP. The combined real estate team of ‘practical and commercial lawyers’ advises on investments, redevelopment, private-public ventures and commercial leasing, while other areas of expertise include real estate M&A, REIT matters and securitizations. A recent highlight included acting for Pebblebrook Hotel Trust on its $5.2bn merger with LaSalle Hotel Properties, while the firm also advised Savanna on its $640m acquisition of the 5 Bryant Park building in New York City. New York-based Carl Schwartz and Matthew Scoville acted for Nahla Capital on the $260m sale of 30 rental apartment buildings in San Francisco, and Houston-based Michael Boyd advised on a joint venture led by USAA Real Estate Company and Patrinely Group on the $270m development of an office building in Colorado and the $188m refinancing of a New York apartment complex. Mark Arnold, who is also based in Houston, advised Clark County Stadium Authority on the $1.9bn development of a 65,000-seat stadium for the Las Vegas Raiders. Dallas-based Howard Schreiber, Jeff Giese and Kathleen Wu are also recommended. In the Los Angeles office, Jane Hinton focuses on highly structured debt and equity real estate transactions including mortgage, mezzanine and preferred equity financing. In the New York office, Peter Mignone specializes in commercial real estate finance and capital markets, including advising institutional lenders on the origination of commercial mortgage and mezzanine loans.
