The 'dedicated’ litigators at Winston & Strawn LLP 'step into the shoes of their clients and counsel them based on real world priorities’. The already sizeable team saw further growth during 2018; among the high-profile litigators who joined the firm were Denise Scofield and Hugh Tanner, both of whom joined the Houston office from Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP. A cross-office team including Harvey Kurzweil in New York, Paula Hinton in Houston and San Francisco-based Robb Adkins represented CPB Contractors as plaintiff in litigation against various Chevron and KBR entities concerning a construction project in Australia. Stephen D’Amore in Chicago 'possesses superb litigation skills and also provides sound advice and strategy in assessing exposure and settlement value of cases’. One of the co-chairs of the litigation department, he regularly takes a lead role on some of the firm's significant cases; recently, this has included defending Archer Daniels Midland in a class action in Illinois federal court concerning the company’s equine products. Thomas Melsheimer is the managing partner of the Dallas office, and consumer class action expert Amanda Groves splits her time between Charlotte and Silicon Valley.

The consumer and class action practice at Winston & Strawn LLP boasts a client roster including prominent brands such as Dell, Costco Wholesale and Mazda Motor. The team advised the latter on a putative nationwide class action alleging that Mazda falsely advertised its navigation software which purported to offer real-time traffic alerts in all of its 2016 model year cars. Other recent work highlights include Chicago-based Scott Glauberman's successful representation of Abbott Laboratories in a class action relating to the 'organic' labeling of its Similac infant formula, and Chicago-based Ronald Rothstein's defense of The JM Smucker Company and Big Heart Pet Brands in a case which confirmed that 'mere puffery' in advertising is not actionable under the Lanham Act . Other key names to note include Amanda Groves, who focuses on complex commercial litigation and splits her time between Charlotte and Silicon Valley, and Los Angeles-based Steve Smerek.
