Fernando Vázquez-Chelius Solis – White & Case S.C.

White & Case LLP continues to impress in the market thanks to its consistent prominence in corporate lending, acquisition financings, restructurings and distressed financings, and project finance. It has an extensive geographic focus with sizeable teams in Sao Paulo, Mexico City, Miami and New York. With the growth in US-dollar financings in Brazil, the firm has achieved substantial growth in Sao Paulo and its other Latin America-focused offices; Sao Paulo executive partner and native Portuguese speaker John Anderson led the team that advised Petrobras on a $5bn revolving credit facility. Moreover, the practice continues to be at the forefront of renewable energy project financings in key markets such as Chile, Mexico and Colombia, and is a growing force in transport infrastructure financings in Paraguay and elsewhere. Carlos Viana leads the Latin America practice and is at the forefront of energy and infrastructure financings throughout Latin America. New York partner Sabrena Silver is a key figure in acquisition and structured financings and Chris Hansen is a leader in Latin America aviation finance. Richard Kebrdle is experienced in Latin America restructurings and Anna Andreeva is another key name across bank, acquisition, project and structured finance along with equipment financings and leasing. Adrian Leal and Mexico City’s Fernando Vázquez-Chelius Solis impress at associate level. All individuals are based in Miami unless stated otherwise.

Mexico > Corporate and M&A

Highly-valued for its ‘hands-on approach to each deal’ which gives clients ‘the peace of mind of being in the best hands’, White & Case S.C. ‘s Mexican corporate and M&A group boasts particular dexterity in cross-border M&A transactions, relying on the firm’s notable international footprint. iSquared Capital, Sempra Energy, Merama, Médica Sur and JP Morgan Mexico are some of the standout names that regularly instruct the practice led by Henri Capin-Gally, who garners praise for being ‘stellar when it comes to negotiating and implementing corporate acquisition schemes’. Work highlights include advising Kansas City Southern on its $31bn merger with Canadian Pacific. Sergio Márquez and associate Fernando Vázquez-Chelius Solís are other names to note. However, the practice has endured significant departures, notably those of former practice co-head Francisco García Naranjo, who moved to Mayer Brown Mexico, S.C. in July 2021; and those of Álvaro Garza-Galván and Mauricio Valdespino, who joined DLA Piper Mexico in January 2022. The practice also suffered the untimely demise of Vicente Corta in May 2022.

Mexico > Banking and finance

A renowned full-service giant with a respected Mexican banking and finance practice. White & Case S.C. has established itself as the firm of choice for a number of top-notch global and national financial institutions, as well as for well known domestic corporate entities. The group continues to act in significant transactions for both lenders and borrowers, as evidenced by its recent work for Citibanamex, as agent, on a $240m unsecured syndicated credit facility granted to Ragasa Industrias; and for Braskem Idesa on the refinancing of its circa $1.35bn project finance debt. Following the untimely passing of Vicente Corta in May 2022, the department is now led solely by Juan Antonio Martín, who has a strong focus on syndicated loans and asset-backed financings. María Teresa Fernández Labardini brings particular expertise in fintech matters to the practice; Manuel Groenewold focuses on capital markets, banking, bankruptcy/insolvency and project finance; while Carlos Mainero‘s practice is centred on bank finance and finance regulatory matters. Up-and-coming figure Andrés Mosqueira advises on bank finance and financial regulatory matters, and has a particular focus on the asset management industry, payment systems, pension funds and securities regulatory matters. At associate level, seniors Carlos González (financial regulatory, banking law, fintech and capital markets), Rebeca García López (local and cross-border debt and equity financings), and Fernando Vázquez-Chelius Solís (structured, acquisition and private equity financings; syndicated and bilateral loans, bridge loans and debt restructuring) are the names to note. Since research concluded, the team has been further strengthened with the hire of Eduardo Flores Herrera -formerly of Creel, García-Cuéllar, Aiza y Enríquez, S.C.– as of July 2022.
