Testimonials

‘The Eversheds public inquiry team, now led by the outstanding Sarah Jones, with formidable support from Isabelle Makeham, Angharad Hurle and Anna Parry, is the leading firm in their field. Their range of depth of experience is unrivalled and their current involvement in all of the main inquiries of the day, including IICSA and Grenfell Tower, amply bears this out. In my 15 years of practice in this field, I have not come across a firm which comes near them. They take a focused, down to earth and practical approach to all issues. They have strength in depth and the ability to create and support substantial teams at short notice.’

‘See above for the names of the leading members of the team with whom I have worked in recent years. However, if I had to identify an exceptional strength of the team as a whole, I would say that it is their ability to work together and with Counsel and clients. Thus, by definition, there is more of an emphasis on the collective product than on individual stars.’

‘The practice has been instrumental in procurement for a complex replacement service which has previously suffered difficulties in completion to award along with financial settlement to bidders. The expertise and breadth of experience in PCR2015 and risk mitigation has to date ensured the procurement remains compliant and on time without challenge.’

‘Ash Woodcock who brings an ability to convert the complex legal issues into focus with plain English and options on proceeding through the processes with each option risk profiled. Nick Blane who presents a more strategic view on compliance and mitigation of the complex procurement. Both are well versed in engaging at working level and with Executive leadership.’

Central and local government bodies retain Cardiff-based Huw Jones, who is co-head of Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP’s public sector group, to handle large-scale transformation projects, governance matters and the public and administrative issues relating to procurement projects and pension schemes. The Birmingham-based public inquiries and investigations team (which features practice co-head Sarah JonesPeter Jones and principle associate Isabelle Mitchell) represents core participants, interested parties and foundation trusts in high-profile statutory and non-statutory investigations. Leveraging the firm’s public inquiries profile, the team also provides audit services into the decision-making policies of national regulators, notably in the transport and aerospace fields.

Sarah Jones; Huw Jones

Other key lawyers:

Peter Jones; Isabelle Mitchell; Angharad Shurmer; Anna Lois Senter

Testimonials

Eversheds Sutherland has one of the most experienced team in the public inquiries field.

Sarah Jones is very bright, very strategic and has a clear sense of direction. She has the the ability to project and to inspire confidence in clients, fellow professionals and the public alike. I have seen her deal with lawyers on national statutory inquiries and the representatives of child sexual exploitation survivors’ groups in the same calm and clear way; she does not sugar coat, obfuscate or steamroller, merely sets out her priorities and usually gets where she needs to be. She is very aware of the clients’ needs and means, particularly when dealing with public bodies, and I have seen her devise and recommend effective cost-saving strategies where others might have let things run and wait for client comment.

Isabelle Mitchell is an obvious rising star, with long experience of inquiries and a tactical approach. I have seen this in the context of a non-statutory inquiry, which brings problems of disclosure, relying on co-operation and consent to achieve its goals. She is in day-to-day control of the Commissioning Body for the Inquiry, marshalling a large team with great skill to great effect – particularly challenging during home working for Covid-19 – but she has made sensible changes of emphasis that have allowed the work to continue without apparent interruption.

Peter Jones is possibly the most experienced partner dealing with public inquiries in the country at the moment and he is helped by exceptionally able principal and senior associates: Isabelle Mitchell, Angharad Shurmer and Anna Lois Senter. They are some of the best solicitors at this level that I have worked with.

The Lex 100 Verdict

With its 'significant international presence and impressive client roster, offering better work/life balance than a City firm', Eversheds Sutherland is a firm favourite with trainees who love that it is 'truly international in scope while still based in regional offices'. The firm has offices spread across the UK and Northern Ireland providing a wide range of seats and experience. Trainees stress the importance of the firm's international secondment opportunities, for which the firm receives a Lex 100 Winner award. The 'work/life balance', 'ambition' and 'strong senior management team' are all praised, as well as the firm's 'office culture' and 'high retention rates'. One trainee 'attended events at various firms and did other vacation schemes, but Eversheds was the most approachable and welcoming by far. I was made to feel at ease at every stage of the application process, and thought that this attitude was likely to carry on throughout the training contract, which it has'. The training structure differs between seats and departments but is commonly thought to provide 'more responsibility for trainees' than competitors. Drawbacks identified are that 'quite often trainees' seat choices cannot be accommodated, especially in the regional offices' plus there is a lack of clarity around international secondment applications and trainee remuneration. However, the firm's 'inclusive, open environment' and the 'supportive culture that allows trainees to learn whilst on the job' is highly praised. If you are looking for a global-reaching, ambitious and UK-wide, full-service firm, Eversheds Sutherland is a great choice.
