Work Department

Nick advises education clients in the areas of governance, student issues, collaborative provision and commercial contracts. Examples of work include:

  • consultancy to the consortium of universities undertaking the HEFCE-funded ARMED Project (Active Risk Management in Education)
  • advising both further and higher education clients on a wide range of collaborative arrangements both in the UK and overseas, including the establishment of a new university in Tashkent and the development of template agreements for  UK and overseas collaborations
  • advising colleges on the issues raised by the government's agenda for students aged 14 to 19 and organising, with the Institute of Education, a conference on the legal implications of school/college collaborations
  • advising a number of learndirect hubs on the terms of agreements proposed by Ufi and negotiating letters of comfort from Ufi
  • advising further and higher education clients on student disability issues, preparing template student disability policies for colleges (funded by London East LSC) and universities and overseeing research into the legal implications of students with mental health problems conducted for Eversheds by Professor Neville Harris
  • advising New York University on education law issues arising from its activities in the UK.

Before joining Eversheds was a principal lecturer at Trent Polytechnic and Head of Legal Education at the Law Society. He has also managed the Legal Practice Course at London Guildhall University. He now undertakes training for universities and colleges and is accredited by LSDA as a governor trainer for further education institutions. In 2001 he undertook a part-time placement at Thames Valley University as Acting University Secretary, pending the appointment of the new Secretary. He has been an assessor for the Beacon Awards in FE and writes articles on education law issues. He has been a college governor and is a governor of a primary school. He is a member of the Education Law Association.
