Brexit and the legal implications for businessesGeoffrey is an employment law Partner, and heads the Employment/Education team in London and the South East.

He advises a wide range of Colleges and Universities, as well as sector bodies and other education related institutions.

His recent experience includes:

  • advising on the merger of two further education colleges, including advising on changing terms and conditions of employment following the transfer. 
  • advising on all of the employment implications of the closure of the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) in 2013, including issues relating to collective redundancy consultation, TUPE transfers, relocation and the calculation of enhanced redundancy payments. 
  • providing training to several hundred staff at a university in London on their responsibilities regarding discrimination and equal opportunities. 
  • advising a college on the introduction of new terms and conditions of employment for all lecturing staff, including devising a strategy of dismissal and offering of new contracts of employment, which was achieved in such a way that no claims were brought against the College. 
  • drafting detailed guidance for the Association of Colleges on the TUPE Regulations 2014 which was published for the entire FE sector.  
  • successfully appealing to the Employment Appeal Tribunal in a case where a College client had initially been found liable for discrimination and unfair dismissal. 
  • acting for a college in respect of the removal of the Principal, against whom allegations of impropriety had been made. Responding to concerns raised by the Skills Funding Agency as regards termination arrangements. 
  • acting for a University in handling a sensitive race discrimination claim by a senior professor, successfully defending it as a 7 day tribunal hearing in November 2013.

Geoffrey has written a range of articles on employment law, and is the co author of two books on the subject. He speaks regularly at conferences including ones organised by the Association of Colleges, the University and Colleges Employers Association and also presents at Eversheds' conferences for education sector clients. He was chair of the Industrial Law Society, the longest established organisation for employment lawyers and industry relations specialists.
