Charles is a partner in our corporate and M&A group; member of the Clean Energy and Sustainability team and head of our North East corporate and M&A practice.   He has a background in both private practice and industry having been a corporate partner at another large London based practice in addition to having held legal director and general counsel roles in the electricity and chemicals sectors.

Charles has advised national and international clients, both public and private, on numerous acquisitions and disposals of companies and businesses both in the UK and overseas, complex group reorganisations, as well as the raising and providing of debt and equity finance.  In addition, while in the electricity sector, Charles gained experience of large outsourcing projects, capital asset procurement and projects work, including renewables.  Charles has extensive knowledge of corporate governance requirements in both a FTSE 100 group and in a more entrepreneurial private equity environment.  He also has multi-site supply chain experience from his time with an international chemicals group.

Examples of Charles' recent experience include:

  • Advising an international group forming part of a consortium which bought assets in the oil and gas sector in the UK 
  • Advising on a substantial LLP development joint venture 
  • Advising on energy projects in the Solar, Offshore Wind and Biomass sectors 
  • Advising the shareholders of a large generic pharmaceutical company on its sale to a German quoted pharma group 
  • Advising on private equity investments and exits 
  • Disposing of non-core business in Japan; the establishment of a procurement hub in Hong Kong; in addition to work undertaken to prepare an international, offshore based, private equity backed group for listing

Charles also play a key role in local business fora in the North East, in particular on energy matters and corporate governance.
