Career

She worked as International Associate at the U.S.-based law firm Greenberg Traurig in New York from 2001 to 2002. In 2004, she left the law firm González Uribe, where she was an associate, to join the BLP team and become the first female partner in 2008.

Vivian is currently the coordinator of the Pro-Bono Commission of the Costa Rican Bar Association and member of the Board of Directors of the National Advisory Board on Social Responsibility. She is also member of the New York State Bar Association (International Chapter), founding member of the Costa Rican Harvard – Club MIT and founding member of Harvard Latin America & Friends Shared Interest Group. Furthermore, she serves as Director of the BLP Foundation and Director of the Female Commission at BLP. She is also a promoter of a corporate social responsibility program for BLP employees and coordinates environmental initiatives at the Firm which have resulted in being designated as recipient of the Blue Flag Ecological recognition for three consecutive years granted by certain governmental entities, and becoming the first law firm designated “Carbon Neutral Country Brand” in Costa Rica in 2015 and the only law firm with a 5-star classification. In 2016, she accepted representing Costa Rica before the Steering Committee of Program “Women in the Profession” in the Vance Center.

Vivian holds a Degree in Law (with Honors) from Universidad de Costa Rica and an LLM Degree from Harvard University, United States.

In one recent highlight, Luis Ortiz and the highly-regarded Luís M Castro advised Globalvia subsidiary Autopistas del Sol on the issue of $300m senior secured notes on the international markets (and a further $50.75m locally). Other work includes representing BNP Paribas Securities on the $250m securitization of the diversified payment rights of Banco Davivienda Costa Rica. The department is co-led by Andrés López and Vivian Liberman; David Gutiérrez and Luis Hernández are other key figures. The firm’s client base includes high-profile financial institutions, such as Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank and Scotiabank.

BLP’s 10-partner corporate and M&A practice has a superlative reputation in the market and covers the full array of corporate and M&A-related work, including advice on matters related to private equity, venture capital, corporate restructuring and cross-border M&A deals. In one recent headline mandate, Luís M Castro and Eduardo Calderón led advice to Accenture on the acquisition of Virginia-based technology services company, Search Technologies. Vivian Liberman, who is also active in the banking and finance sphere, assisted One Equity Partners with the acquisition of leading BPO company One Link. Seller-side work saw Ronald Lachner advise Medtronic on the multimillion-dollar sale of its patient care, deep vein thrombosis and nutritional insufficiency business lines. Lachner also led advice to Swarovski regarding its operational start up in Costa Rica and the obtaining of free zone regime status. Another key strength of the practice is day-to-day advice, where its multinational client roster includes the likes of Cargill, KFC, Pfizer and American Airlines. David Gutiérrez, who now splits his time between San José and Madrid, and Uri Weinstok are other key figures in the department.
