Josh Dambacher is a partner in the Investment Management Group at Schulte Roth & Zabel. He serves as co-head of the firm’s London office. He focuses his practice on corporate, securities and regulatory matters. He primarily represents institutional and entrepreneurial investment managers, financial services firms and private investment funds in all aspects of their business. Josh’s experience includes structuring investment management firms, hedge funds, private equity funds, hybrid funds and funds of funds; and structuring and negotiating seed and strategic investments. He also regularly advises investment management firms and their principals on UK and US regulatory compliance, acquisitions and reorganisations of investment management firms, and restructuring proprietary trading desks into independent investment management firms.

Josh previously led the US Financial Reforms Working Group for the Alternative Investment Management Association. He has been described by interviewees in Chambers UK as “pragmatic and commercial in his outlook” and “always reachable no matter what.” Josh is listed as a leading investment management lawyer by Chambers UK, Chambers Europe, IFLR1000, The Legal 500 UK and Who’s Who Legal: The International Who’s Who of Private Funds Lawyers. He was listed in the Financial News 40 Under 40 Rising Stars of Hedge Funds 2012 and Financial News 40 Under 40 Rising Stars of Legal Services 2013. Recently, Josh received an “Outstanding Contribution” award for his services to the hedge fund industry (The Hedge Fund Journal Awards 2018). He is also a frequent speaker and author on issues facing the investment management industry including, most recently, on the current regulatory landscape for hedge funds, the EU Directive on Alternative Investment Fund Managers and the US Dodd-Frank Act.

Schulte Roth & Zabel International LLP stands out in the London hedge funds arena, as demonstrated by the fact it acts for more than half of the 100 largest hedge fund managers in the world. The London team, which is co-led by Christopher Hilditch and Josh Dambacher, added 45 clients to its sizeable portfolio in 2018; Greenvale Capital LLP, Indar Capital LLP and JNE Partners LLP were among the client wins. Noted for its ability to advise on UK and US law, the group assists clients with fund formation, ongoing management and regulatory issues, spin-outs as well as related tax matters. Dambacher led the advice to Boldhaven Management LLP on the launch of long/short equities focused Cayman and Delaware master/feeder funds, which totalled $800 million in assets under management (AUM) after six months of trading. In another matter, Dambacher and Lee Smith are acting for Cevian Capital on the negotiation of multiple investments from institutional investors, including US pension funds and sovereign wealth funds. Emily Brown joined in 2018 from Macfarlanes LLP, while Anthony Lombardi and Smith were more recently promoted as special counsels.

In the emerging markets space, Christopher Hilditch and Cathy Weist assisted Falcon Edge Capital with launching its second fund which seeks to invest in private equity in India. Private equity fund formation of this kind is a key focus area, in addition to co-investment work and hybrid funds. The firm also offers funds-related tax and regulatory advice. On the LP side, the group boasts specialist expertise in distressed investing. The team hired Emily Brown from Macfarlanes LLP in November 2018. Josh Dambacher and Hilditch are joint practice heads.
