Lawyer Rankings

Peru > Banking and finance

Payet, Rey, Cauvi, Pérez Abogados fields a large banking and finance team, which is adept at handling domestic and international transactions, loans and financings and acts for both borrowers and lenders. The team is jointly led by founding partner José Antonio Payet and José Cúneo, with Payet advising on corporate finance transactions, securities offerings, securitisations and traditional banking matters, and Cúneo being a key name for financial transactions in the mining sector. Eduardo Vega handles financing and investment funds matters for foreign and domestic clients, while Alan García Nores is noted for financing and regulatory matters. Giovanna García is a key contact for advice on syndicated facilities, and principal associate Rocio Gordillo handles debt and equity transactions.

Peru > Capital markets

José Antonio Payet and Eduardo Vega head the capital markets offering at Payet, Rey, Cauvi, Pérez Abogados and act as lead counsel on some of the largest deals in the Peruvian market, advising a strong roster of high-profile financial institutions. Payet is recognised in the market for both corporate and financial matters, and in the capital markets space, handles securities offerings and securitisations; Vega, meanwhile, is recommended for the structuring and issuance of debt and equity transactions, and investment funds. José Cúneo is another key member of the team, with considerable experience in transactions in the mining industry; Alan García Nores brings considerable international experience to the team; and principal associate Rocio Gordillo is active in transactional matters, including securitisations and mutual funds.

Peru > Compliance

Payet, Rey, Cauvi, Pérez Abogados‘ compliance team is highlighted for its experience in economic criminal law and crime prevention, as well as its ability to provide domestic and international compliance services in conjunction with different practice areas within the firm. The team is adept at advising clients on matters involving money laundering, antitrust law, financial law, labour matters, occupational health and safety, and other regulatory risks, to name a few. The practice is jointly led by banking, mining and industrial sectors expert Juan Diego Ugaz, Carlos Patrón, who is recommended for the implementation of antitrust compliance programmes, José Cúneo and Francisco Ugaz, who is also active in the banking and mining industries, among others. At the associate level, Giancarlo Baella handles competition law matters, Erick Palao is noted for corporate criminal law expertise, and Renzo Vinelli is a key contact for criminal procedural law.

Peru > Energy and natural resources > Mining

In a remarkable coup, Payet, Rey, Cauvi, Pérez Abogados hired virtually the entirety of CMS Grau‘s mining team in October 2023, welcoming practice head Cecilia Gonzáles (corporate, M&A and regulatory matters pertaining to the natural resources and the extractive industries) and a group consisting of: Raúl Ferreryra (who brings corporate, IP, tax and real estate-side expertise to the practice); counsel Liliana Pautrat (who is active in the exploration, exploitation, processing and transport segments of the mining industry, and has a focus on regulatory matters); and four associates. They join a team which had already established a relevant footprint in the sector (particularly on the financing side) under the leadership of partner José Cúneo (with support from environmental specialist Vanessa Chávarry -who was raised to the partnership in December 2022- and counsel Ángel Chávez). While it remains to see how this significant group hire will settle at it new home, the combined group not only has capability in the transactional and financing aspects of the practice, but also expertise across areas including titling and real estate, environmental and social issues, administrative matters, regulatory compliance, project development and construction, and tax and labour issues; as such, it looks likely to boost the firm to key player-status in the sector.
