Elisabeth (Lis) has extensive experience in energy regulation, M&A, derivatives, structured trading and commercial issues in the energy sector.

Lis has advised project developers, multinational energy and utility companies, investment banks, commodities trading houses, hedge funds and governments.

She has spent several extended periods on secondment to in-house legal departments in the energy sector. Lis has particular experience in the regulation, operation and optimisation of energy assets in the gas, renewables, power and nuclear sectors and Legal 500 UK describes her as a "key advisor" on "energy trading and regulatory matters."

The commodities practice at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe (Europe) LLP focuses mainly on the energy sector, in which is has built a strong team in London during the last three years that has simultaneously grown its client base of major trading houses, financial institutions and energy companies. Among these are Axpo Trading, Trailstone, ENGIE Global Markets, Castleton Commodities and SOCAR Trading. Its work for these clients encompasses the establishment of trading platforms, trade documentation, dispute resolution, structured trading, trade finance and regulatory advice. The practice is 'very responsive, has very good industry knowledge and knows the LNG market', remarks one client. Matthew Williams, who 'has an ability to untangle complex matters into easily understandable topics', and Edward Humphries co-lead the practice. Humphries advised JPMorgan on its acquisition of Barclays Bank's European and US energy trading portfolio. Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe (Europe) LLP recently gained several new high-profile clients such as Trailstone and BB Energy and bolstered its power offering with the hire of Paul Doris from Watson Farley & Williams LLP . The firm has a strong presence in the renewables space; Anthony Riley advised BlackRock and NextEnergy on their respective acquisitions of operational solar assets in the UK. Bioenergy Infrastructure Group benefited from practice head Matthew Williams ' advice on its acquisition of biomass and energy-from-waste facilities from Macquarie, while Alexander Janes assisted Canadian Solar as borrower with its £41.85m financing from Bayerische Landesbank of a series of solar projects. Edward Humphries represented an investment fund in the purchase of senior notes to refinance several project finance loans and is also a key contact alongside senior associate Rebecca Downes , of counsel Elisabeth Blunsdon and John Deacon .
