Richard Stock is a partner in Mayer Brown’s Hong Kong office. He is a co-leader of Mayer Brown’s Banking & Finance practice, and a leader of the firm’s Asset Finance team. He focuses his practice on the aviation industry, with over twenty-five years experience assisting airlines, lessors and financial institutions to document aircraft and aviation-related transactions.
Richard has extensive experience in advising on aircraft finance and leasing matters for both commercial and business aircraft as well as documenting the acquisition and disposal of aircraft. He has negotiated OEM documentation for the purchase of new aircraft with a total value exceeding USD 27 billion. Richard also advises airlines and lessors on the acquisition and disposal of portfolios of used aircraft.
Richard has a particular interest in airline operational matters, having advised airlines on long-term engine maintenance agreements and inventory technical management agreements with total revenues exceeding USD 7 billion.
In recent years, an increasing proportion of Richard’s practice has included advising investors on large, strategically important projects, including the establishment of new airlines, the re-purposing of existing airlines and the establishment of aircraft leasing platforms.
Chambers Asia Pacific (2018) noted that “He is famous in Asia as one of the most experienced aircraft finance practitioners.” And “He has strong commercial awareness and gets right to the point on issues.”
Richard is ranked Band 1 by Chambers (2011-2018) and Tier 1 by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific (2015-2018).

Vietnam > Banking and finance
At Mayer Brown, the team has a robust banking practice with strong links with the Hong Kong office led by Richard Stock. David Harrison in Ho Chi Minh City is the key name to note in Vietnam, handling a wealth of high-value transactions across Southeast Asia pertaining to capital markets, foreign investment and leveraged finance. The group has a cross-sector approach and acts for clients in the banking, energy and real estate space. Experienced senior associate Orsolya Szotyory-Grove has expertise in corporate matters and securities. Former Hanoi managing partner Hoang Anh Nguyen has departed the firm to set up his own practice.

Benefiting from a longstanding presence in the Asian market and also able to draw upon the expertise of lawyers from across the firm’s international network, the ‘communicative, friendly and professional‘ team at Mayer Brown is well-equipped to handle work for a diverse range of clients in the aviation and maritime sectors, from both a pan-Asian and international perspective. Maggie Cheung has close ties with many of the leading international and PRC banks lending into the maritime industry, while co-head Conor Warde continues to generate a substantial amount of work on behalf of PRC-based lessor clients, in particular. At associate level, Dora Ying is gaining market recognition and regularly takes the lead on behalf of banking clients on bilateral and syndicated financings. On the aviation front, Richard Stock heads up a ‘strong practice‘ that is active across the gamut of financing work (for international and Chinese banks, as well as some airlines), as well as on other transactional work including aircraft trading.

Mayer Brown advises both lenders and borrowers on cross-border transactions, leveraged and acquisition finance, bilateral and syndicated loans, real estate finance, fund finance, structured finance, asset finance, project finance and trade finance. Other areas of expertise include capital call financings, loan-to-own financings, margin loans, distressed portfolio sales and work-outs, and bank governance and advisory services. Clients include debt funds, private equity houses, corporates, and international and regional banks and financial institutions based in PRC and Japan. Richard Stock heads up the team, which includes Fanny Wang, Francis Chen, Doo-Soon Doos Choi and Benjamin Sandstad. Also recommended is recently promoted partner Dion Yu.
China > Banking and finance: foreign firms
Mayer Brown advises lenders and borrowers on financings involving leveraged matters, acquisitions, bi-lateral and syndicated loans, real estate, funds, structured products, aviation and shipping, projects and trade finance. Hallam Chow joined the Beijing office in 2018 from White & Case LLP as head of projects (China) and has worked with Chinese and international lenders and borrowers on major outbound and inbound transactions in the technology, energy, oil and gas, healthcare, real estate and logistic assets sectors. Boya Shen is the mainland senior associate to note, and in Hong Kong, Richard Stock heads the firm’s asset finance team.
