Antitrust & Competition

Jean Paul Poitras is a partner in Latham & Watkins’ Brussels office. His practice focuses on EU competition law, with an emphasis on cartel defense, merger review, cooperation agreements, and abuse of dominance. Over the years, he has also handled matters involving other areas of EU law including aviation law, environmental law, product safety, and trade. Mr Poitras has practiced in Brussels for more than 23 years and served as the Managing Partner of Latham’s Brussels office from March 2012 to March 2018. He has led high-profile cartel defense and merger control cases. On the cartel side this includes his leadership in the firm’s representation of one of the airlines in the Air Cargo global cartel investigations, including in appeal before the General Court.  Mr. Poitras also led the representation of a shipping company in the European Commission’s investigation of the liner shipping industry, which ended successfully for our client as it was the only top 10 liner shipping company against whom proceedings were not initiated. In his merger control practice, Mr. Poitras recently acted as lead EU competition partner for US Airways in its combination with American Airlines – a matter that won the GCR 2014 Matter of the Year Award – and assisted Neptune Orient Lines in obtaining global merger clearances for its US$2.4 billion acquisition by CMA CGM.
